- "Well, if there was someone who was almost as fast as me, and that person had help from a team, then maybe..."
"Hold on. Are you saying you want Team Sonic to save Christmas?" - ―Santa Claus and Sonic the Hedgehog
A Very Sonic Christmas is an animated short film released to promote Sonic the Hedgehog 3's "12 Hours of Sonic" campaign.
Synopsis[]
An instant Christmas classic. 🎄 You’re welcome.[1]
Plot[]

Team Sonic meets Santa Claus
In the Wachowski Residence, Sonic the Hedgehog teaches Tails and Knuckles the Echidna how to celebrate Christmas, which involves Christmas lights, ugly sweaters and Santa Claus, whom Sonic claims to be almost as fast as himself. When Tails wonders how, Sonic suggests to ask him personally, transporting Santa to the house via ring portal. Upon his entrance, Santa has strained his ankle, pleading Team Sonic to save the holiday.

Team Sonic delivers Christmas presents
Team Sonic takes Santa's sleigh across the world, delivering presents to everyone but Doctor Eggman and his grandfather Gerald Robotnik, who are listed as naughty on the naughty list. The team return home, opening a gift to themselves that is a framed family photo.

Shadow the Hedgehog steals Santa's sleigh
After thanking Santa, Team Sonic brings him home, spotting Shadow the Hedgehog hooking the sleigh onto his Dark Rider. He drives off after informing Santa that he chose the wrong Hedgehog to save Christmas, as Sonic can't teleport.

Trivia[]
- The short film was animated by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the same studio behind Robot Chicken, for which skits based on the Sonic the Hedgehog series have been produced.
Behind the Scenes[]
Continuity[]
The promotional short film depicts multiple continuity issues that conflicts with what was established in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, making it impossible to place in a feasible/viable timeframe in the main universe. Thus, as per the canon policy, this material is deemed to be non-canonical to the Sonic the Hedgehog Cinematic Universe.
- In the short film, there are multiple implications that this is supposed to take place after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which would place it on Christmas Eve, 2024. However, this brings up several issues that conflicts with the third film.
- In the short, Sonic mentions that it is their "first holiday together" to Tails and Knuckles. This is impossible, as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 suggests that the film should be a calendar year or more after Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which would give Team Sonic the opportunity to celebrate their first holiday together within the first year of being together as a group (with the novelization narrowing it down to just "last year"), and it is very unlikely that they would skip the holidays.
- The short depicts both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik on the naughty list while Team Sonic helps Santa deliver the presents. Sonic is seen looking at the two names and acts as if he knows for certain that they are still alive. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Gerald dies upon being launched towards Shadow's Chaos Energy circling around the Space Colony ARK, and pops like an insect. Eggman is also presumed dead after the ARK seemingly implodes, causing Team Sonic to think that he sacrificed himself along with Shadow.
- Additionally, after Shadow makes an appearance and steals Santa's sleigh, Sonic acts like his appearance isn't that much of a big deal, suggesting that he hadn't also thought Shadow sacrificed himself, when that is shown to not be the case in the third film.
