The Chaos Emeralds are seven mystical gemstones of immense power that form the Master Emerald.
During the Battle Against the Giant Eggman Robot, Sonic the Hedgehog attempted to use the Master Emerald, but it shattered, releasing the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic was able to use all seven emeralds and save his family with a super transformation, defeating Doctor Eggman and destroying his giant robot. Despite having supreme power, Sonic chose to scatter the emeralds across the planet, wanting to maintain his life as a kid.
The emeralds were used once more during Shadow the Hedgehog's revenge plot. Sonic attacked Shadow in his super form, only to lose it once the latter punched back. They clashed in their super forms after they both hurdled towards the fallen emeralds. In stopping the planet-devastating Eclipse Cannon together, Sonic lost his super form again, leaving Shadow with the emeralds. The shockwave of the cannon's explosion sent him back to Earth, losing his transformation upon impact.

Centuries ago, the Echidna found seven emeralds, and brought them together. Upon reuniting them, the Master Emerald was created, a magnificent stone that beholds the power of all seven Chaos Emeralds. It could bring imagination into reality, and has the capability of both destroying and creating civilizations, but the Owls believed there is no one who should equip such abilities, and took it to guard it.[1]

Centuries later, after the Master Emerald has been rid from the evil Doctor Eggman's hands by Knuckles the Echidna, it broke in Sonic the Hedgehog's hands, revealing the Chaos Emeralds. When his enemy nearly stomps him and the Wachowskis, Sonic transforms into a god-like entity. With newfound powers, Super Sonic violently damages Eggman's giant robot, and leads him to his seeming death. Sonic settles down after summoning chili dogs to eat, releasing the emeralds that scatter themselves elsewhere around the Earth.[1]

After Shadow the Hedgehog put Tom Wachowski in critical condition after confusing him for Commander Walters. An enraged Sonic dead set on revenge, used the Master Emerald to summon the Chaos Emeralds back to him to transform back into Super Sonic. He then flew into space and raced through a window of the Space Colony ARK. Pulling Shadow the Hedgehog out into space with him.
The two then crash landed on Earth, and began fighting. During said fight, Shadow knocked the emeralds out of Sonic and obtained the power as well, thereby becoming Super Shadow. After their fight, Shadow depleted his supply of the Chaos Emeralds power. Nearly allowing Sonic to kill him, however, Sonic stopped himself when he remembered what Tom had said to him earlier about his pain.
Sonic then returned to normal and shared a heart to heart with Shadow about their pain and losses. Shadow then noticed the Eclipse Cannon was about to fire. So, the two hedgehogs used the Chaos Emeralds once more to transform back into their super forms, fight the GUN Hunters, and stop the cannon from hitting the Earth. The two managed to block the cannon's energy blast, but Sonic used up all his energy blocking the attack and fell unconscious to Earth. The Chaos Emeralds were then all put into Shadow, allowing him to move the cannon away from Earth when it exploded.[2]

Fragments of the ultimate power, the Chaos Emeralds behold incredible power each, granting its user flight, vastly increased innate talents, and the ability to turn thoughts into reality, only accessible by thought, fusing with its user when accessed. The Chaos Emeralds may also alter the user's appearance to accommodate to what is described as "god-like" power. When used by Sonic the Hedgehog, his blue fur turned a golden yellow, complete with a bright yellow aura and red eyes.

- In the video game series, the Chaos Emeralds are a set of seven mysterious and powerful relics that were searched for by many civilizations. Doctor Eggman also seeks them to branch out his villainous ingenious and rule the world, but is constantly thwarted by Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies, who transform into superior versions of themselves when tapping into the power of the emeralds.
Behind the Scenes[]
- The Chaos Emeralds and Sonic's super form were cut from Sonic the Hedgehog because director Jeff Fowler wanted to focus on Sonic and Eggman's relationship beforehand.[3]
