"We must make a vow; to use our powers to keep the universe safe; to watch out for each other."
Knuckles the Echidna to Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails[src]

Chaos Energy[1][2] is a force of powerful energy generated by extraterrestrials hailing from Mobius, the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald, used to improve the wielder's abilities.

Overview[]

"Tom, your brothers are lunatics and neither of them were born with the power to trigger a global cataclysmic event, so..."
"That's a fair point. You hear that, boys? No cataclysmic events, okay? Let's keep this cataclysmic-less."
Maddie Wachowski and Tom Wachowski[src]

Chaos Energy is a force of electric energy biologically generated by extraterrestrials and found in the Chaos Emeralds. The energy can alter in power, depending on what level the wielder wants to use it, and in color, often matching the wielder's fur color.

Chaos Energy is often tied to the wielder's most prominent power, electric current circulating them whenever their ability is enabled. For example, Shadow's energy surrounds him pre- and post-teleportation, and Knuckles' fists naturally generate electricity when clenched. Most extraterrestrials have the ability to run at high speeds, the energy leaving a trail behind them when they do. Chaos Energy also has capabilities of its own besides enhancing external abilities; Gerald Robotnik managed to extend his lifespan by consuming Shadow's energy, managing to healthily age until 110 by 2024.[3][4]

Chaos Energy is also tied to an extraterrestrial's emotional state, which is generated when it intensifies. This is evident when Sonic caused a nationwide power outage via energy blast, when he confronted Knuckles in regard to using the Master Emerald, and when Shadow fueled the Eclipse Cannon.

The energy can be extracted or stored within items, oftentimes via an extraterrestrial's quill. This is how Robotnik charged his Egg-Pod and Intergalactic Beacon, and how The Buyer created pistols, rifles and gauntlets based on Knuckles' energy.

Chaos Energy can additionally be traced and measured on charts, as Tails once tracked down residues of the energy he found on objects Sonic came in contact with by using his Miles Electric. Eggman's Intergalactic Beacon can send out energy waves that function as a signal wide enough to be sent out across the entire galaxy.

The power of the Master Emerald or its Chaos Emeralds can enhance the wielder's energy as well, allowing them to generate objects, such as chili dogs or Chaos Spears made out of it. Eggman's emerald transformation imbued him with the energy, allowing for him to use the electric current to repurpose metallic objects into parts for his giant robot, operable through Eggman's energy.

History[]

Battle for the Master Emerald[]

"With it, a single warrior could defeat entire armies. Believing no one should have such power, an order of heroes recovered the emerald and swore to protect it from evil."
Tails[src]

Ages ago, the Echidna forged the seven Chaos Emeralds together, creating the Master Emerald through chaos energy. They used it for its power and destroyed other armies, only for the Owls to steal it and keep it elsewhere for its safety.[5]

Project Shadow[]

"Shadow's power, his Chaos Energy, went far beyond any living creature. The scientists who discovered and believed the power would rush in a new era for humanity. But Shadow's power proved to be dangerous."
Walters to Team Sonic[src]

In the early 1970s, Shadow the Hedgehog was discovered by the Guardian Units of Nations in a meteorite that crashed in Oklahoma. Project Shadow was initiated as to reasearch Shadow's chaos energy, which scientists believe would rush in a new era for humanity. One of the experiments Shadow partook in was to run laps across Lab 03, generating the energy while project leader Gerald Robotnik observed a vial containing Shadow's produce.

Chaos Energy vials explode

A chaos energy vial erupts and explodes

By 1974, a raid in search of Shadow was organized by G.U.N. after his powers were ruled as too dangerous. During the invasion, a soldier accidentally shot at a tray of vials containing chaos energy, bursting one open. An explosion erupted, causing many casualities, inclduing Shadow's friend Maria Robotnik. Shadow was cryogenized at Prison Island in Japan while Gerald was imprisoned at a classified penitentiary,[2] keeping himself alive using the chaos energy stored in one of Shadow's quills.[3][4]

Green Hills Energy Surge[]

Sonic the Hedgehog[src]

Sonic the Hedgehog was forced out of his home, assuming the Echidna were after his powers. He'd live in Green Hills in secret for ten years, using his super-speed so no one would see him.

A chaos energy blast covers the Pacific Northwest

One day, Sonic played a baseball game by himself before circling around the baseball field with increasing speed while realizing how lonely he was, emitting a spontaneous burst of chaos energy that caused a power blackout throughout the Pacific Northwest, leading to the U.S. government to hire Robotnik to find the cause.[6]

Skirmish at Green Hills[]

With the quill local sheriff Tom once found while on duty, Robotnik later acquired it and used it to power his Egg-Pod, pursuing Sonic in several parts of the world. He’s eventually confront Sonic in Green Hills, where Sonic absorbed the quill's power to complete his chaos energy, using it against Eggman to send him to the Mushroom Planet with a broken ship.[6]

Battle with the Beast[]

Knuckles the Echidna to the Beast[src]

In search of answers on the Master Emerald, Knuckles is captured by two scavengers and is slated to fight a tall beast. Claiming to have no time, he easily defeats it when charging up his chaos energy, delivering a heavy punch. He allies with the scavengers, traveling to find Sonic with the rings he won.[1] They'd eventually come across Eggman, who has built an energy beacon connected to a quill of Sonic's to contact someone who could get him back to Earth when activated. Knuckles becomes an ally of Eggman.[5]

Scanning Chaos Energy[]

"Tracing a single signature across the galaxy is like looking for a needle in 10,000 haystacks! But with my modifications, I've narrowed it down to just a few planets."
Tails[src]

Tails, who saw the energy surge happen, sought out to find Sonic with his Miles Electric scanning for chaos energy signatures. Coming across them in Sonic's Island, Marble Zone, Spring Yard, Aquatic Ruins and Hill Top, Tails reached a dead end and has to choose between the Mushroom Planet and Earth's energy signatures and picks Earth.[1]

"Sonic, you were the most powerful hero in the universe, and you let it go. Why?"
"Because I still have some growing up to do. And I kind of like being a kid."
Tails and Sonic the Hedgehog[src]

Eggman, with the power of the Master Emerald, created a robot replica, rampaging through Green Hills and sending supercharged Badniks to fight Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. The team combined their powers to defeat Eggman, with Sonic using the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic. The team formed an order protecting the Master Emerald and celebrated with a baseball match, in which Knuckles powers his arm to hit the baseball, and ice cream.[5]

Quest to Reno[]

Knuckles the Echidna to The Buyer[src]

After defeating Eggman, Knuckles took out a new mission to train Wade Whipple in the ways of the Echidnas, by helping him win the Bowling Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nevada. Their training was interrupted by former Guardian Units of Nations agents Willoughby and Mason, who were sent by a mysterious buyer to steal his energy. Knuckles engaged the rogue agents using his chaos energy powers, but Mason and Willoughby were equipped with special weapons, charged by his own quills. Despite standing his ground, he was captured by the agents and transferred at the IceCap Ski Resort.[7]

After escaping imprisonment,[8] Knuckles and Wade had been declared fugitives and with a bounty on their heads, they sought refuge in the Wade's old home on Boise, Idaho. During a ceremonial Shabbat Dinner with Wade's family, Wendy and Wanda Whipple, the house was attacked by bounty hunters, who sought to capture Wade. Knuckles defended the house using his powers.[9]

During the bowling tournament, Wade's family was captured by Mason, Willoughby and Wade's father, Pistol Pete Whipple, and they forced Wade to blackmail Knuckles by sending him to their location, acknowledged to the agents that Wade secretly warned Knuckles, who used his chaos energy powers to defeat the rogue agents.

Sonic the Hedgehog[src]

After wreaking havoc in downtown Tokyo, Team Sonic emerged from a G.U.N. helicopter to apprehend Shadow. Refusing to engage with them, Shadow warned the team to step aside before they got hurt. Knuckles attempted to attack Shadow, but Shadow effortlessly teleported to him, twisted his powerful fist in mid-air, and pummeled him, with his own chaos energy powers. He then ambushed Tails before teleporting into the sky with Sonic in his grasp, slamming him to the ground, calling him a weakling. Once the team recovered, Shadow got on the Dark Rider motorcycle and picked up a laser pistol before warning Sonic not to follow him.

Shadow grew more irritated when Sonic started chasing him, and began to shoot at him with his pistol. He lost his gun when Sonic caught up with the motorcycle and grabbed onto it. Shadow then teleported to the Tokyo Skytree and used his chaos energy to drive up the building, ramming against Sonic's ball form. Driving past the top, Shadow slid his bike as Sonic remained atop the building, charging up his chaos energy as he lept towards Sonic, his opponent doing the same. The two's fists met in an explosion that briefly caused a blackout across the city, during which Shadow cuffed Sonic to a metal bar on the Skytree with the handcuffs he was meant to be apprehended with.[2]

Trivia[]

  • In the video game series, Chaos Emerald energy is a mystical force generated by the Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds.
  • Kiel Phegley included the term in his tie-ins as a reference to the Sonic the Hedgehog series and to express Sonic's chaotic feelings in the novelization. He says that "chaos energy" is unofficially canon until it is decided for the term to be used in films.[11]
    • The term was fully acknowledged with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, making the term officially canon.
  • In chapter 15 of Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Novelization, during the scene where Knuckles punches the Master Emerald out of Eggman, it is explicitly described to have Chaos Energy, "Tails watched as the punch reverberated green waves of Chaos Energy." This heavily suggests that the Chaos Energy shown by the extraterrestrials is the same source of energy as the Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds.
