"This is Doctor Ivo Robotnik, dedicating my final livestream to one very special henchman: Agent Stone. If I can't rule the world, I might as well save it! For the one and only person who ever cared about me... Stone... You were more than a sycophant to me. You were... a syco-friend. I'll miss your lattes with steamed Austrian goat milk... I love the way you make 'em! So, I guess there's only one thing left to say. Bzzt, bzzt, bzzt. It's been a real drag! Thanks for nothing!"
―Doctor Eggman[src]

Doctor Ivo Gerald Robotnik[2][7][4] is a roboticist and an electrical engineer with five philosophy doctorates and a genius-level IQ who was hired by the United States Armed Forces to investigate the Green Hills Energy Surge. As his hunt for the cause of the blackout progressed, he discovered that the source was Sonic the Hedgehog, an incredibly powerful alien, and sought to claim his powers for himself. In their encounters, Sonic would mockingly nickname him "Eggman" based on the design of his Flying Egg Badniks. After a confrontation in Green Hills, Montana, Robotnik was defeated and stranded on the Mushroom Planet, where he swore he would return for revenge.

Eggman fulfilled his vow when Knuckles the Echidna arrived on the Mushroom Planet and teamed up with him to get revenge on Sonic. After learning from Knuckles about the Master Emerald, Eggman devised a new plan to find it and use its power to rule the universe. He betrayed Knuckles after having found it at the Master Emerald Shrine, absorbed the Emerald's power, and constructed a colossal robot resembling himself to initiate his conquest. However Knuckles, now opposing him, punched the Emerald out of him. Still having control over the mech, Eggman attempted to kill Sonic, Tom, and Maddie Wachowski. Sonic, however, harnessed the power of the Chaos Emeralds and defeated him as Super Sonic. Presumed dead, Eggman survived and retreated to the Mecha Crab while under the care of his loyal assistant Stone.

Spending the next months in hiding, binging a telenovela as he gained weight, Eggman was rediscovered by Team Sonic, who mistakenly blamed him for an attack on the Chao Garden. Denying involvement, Eggman and Stone made an unlikely alliance with them to find the actual culprit. During this mission, Eggman reunited with his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, forming Team Robotnik with him, Stone and Shadow the Hedgehog. The Robotniks activated the Space Colony ARK, intending to use its Eclipse Cannon to dominate the planet. However, Eggman learned that Gerald planned to destroy Earth to avenge the death of his granddaughter, Maria Robotnik. Forced to betray his grandfather, Eggman, apparently, sacrificed himself in saving the world with Team Sonic and Super Shadow.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

"You ever wonder what your life would have been like if you had a family?"
"Hmm... No!"
"Maybe you wouldn’t have gone full supervillain".
"I have no parents, no aunts, no uncles. And something about my attitude renders me... undesirable to all possible genders."
Sonic the Hedgehog and Doctor Eggman[src]

Ivo Gerald Robotnik was abandoned as a newborn, growing up as an orphan[2] and a social outcast.[8] As a baby, he relied on formula for sustenance. Growing up, Robotnik's intelligence developed rapidly[2] and began to focus more on technology.[8]

During one of his school years, Robotnik was punched in the face by a school bully. The blow caused a nosebleed and tissue damage around his skull, leaving him humiliated in front of the school. Instead of reporting the incident to the principal, Robotnik used his technology to seek revenge on his bully. As a result, the bully ate meals through a straw for a year.[2]

Working With the United States Government[]

"He has a perfect operations record."
Walters to the United States Armed Forces[src]

In his adulthood, Robotnik's mechanical intellect granted him contractual positions in the United States Armed Forces. Through these contracts, he became acquainted with Agent Stone, who would later serve as his assistant.[2] Robotnik also led a team that included an expert mechanic who admired his brilliance in robotics. Robotnik received training from the Native American Shadow Wolves, trackers of illegal immigration from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.[2] His intellect was recognized by several people, including Willoughby, who was inspired by him and recognized him as a great scientist.[7]

Coup in Pakistan[]

"Remember the Coup in Pakistan?"
"No."
Walters and the Army Chief of Staff[src]

Ivo was contracted by the United States Armed Forces to invade the government of Pakistan and replace it with their own government. Robotnik succeeded, giving the United States of America jurisdiction in the region.[2]

Uprising in Azerbaijanistan[]

"Or the Uprising in Azerbaijanistan?"
"That's not even a country."
"Exactly. And you can thank Robotnik for that."
Walters and the Navy Chief of Staff[src]

Robotnik was contracted to reclaim the territory of Azerbaijanistan, which had been taken in an uprising in the region. He succeeded, returning the region's jurisdiction to the government of Azerbaijan.[2]

"Now, you do what you're told. Stand over there on the edge of your personal abyss... and watch my machines do your job."
―Ivo Robotnik to Bennington[src]

After being assigned to investigate the Green Hills Energy Surge by the Pentagon, Robotnik and his loyal assistant, Agent Stone, arrived in Green Hills, Montana, deciding to lead the further search of the anomaly's cause as opposed to Major Bennington. He sent his drones out into the forest, capturing an image of the currently unknown creature's footprint. He found out that the aforementioned footprint belonged to a being outside the ordinary animal kingdom.[2]

Visiting the Wachowski Residence[]

"Mr. Wachowski, are you familiar with US Code 904, Title 10, Article 104?"
"Yeah, who isn't-"
"'Anyone who attempts to aid an enemy of the United States shall suffer death.' And if I'm the one who catches you, it'll be even worse."
"Worse than death?"
―Ivo Robotnik and Tom Wachowski[src]

Robotnik traced the footsteps of Sonic the Hedgehog to the Wachowski Residence, where he met Tom Wachowski. Robotnik attempted to enter using a clever lie, which was outsmarted by Wachowski. He managed to enter nonetheless, eventually finding a quill that belonged to the Hedgehog. Demanding the reveal of its whereabouts, he counted to five, but his drone attack on Wachowski was halted by Sonic himself, who had freaked out Robotnik. Due to a punch he immediately earned from Tom, the drone next to Robotnik attacked and severely damaged the house. Sonic and Tom fled once the robot itself was destroyed. As Robotnik's agent Stone arrived, Robotnik recovered, asking the assistant to call Optical Illusions for new glasses and to take the quill along.[2]

Hunt for Sonic the Hedgehog[]

Contacting Tom Wachowski[]

"Hi. I'm so glad that you called. Uh, so, some guys came in asking some questions. Uh, they're a little creepy. Kind of reminded me of, uh, the guys from Men in Black, but not as likable or, uh, charming as Will Smith."
Wade Whipple to Tom Wachowski[src]

When Tom Wachowski and Sonic the Hedgehog stopped near the Piston Pit, Tom went out to call Green Hills Sheriff's Department. He talked to Wade Whipple until the phone was taken by Robotnik. He and his team had previously questioned Wachowski's actions. Robotnik threatened Wachowski, telling the story of an injured bully. Tom hung up, however, which Whipple clarified. After ridiculing Wade, Robotnik and his team left the building.[2]

Robotnik and his team later came to the Piston Pit to investigate the happenings that occurred prior to said investigation. Robotnik and Stone interviewed a thug largely involved in the fight. The man revealed little to nothing, leading to the two injuring him more than he was before.

Robotnik and Stone analyzed the current location of Tom Wachowski and Sonic the Hedgehog, sending Badniks to defeat them.[2]

Highway Ambush[]

Robotnik prepares his attack upon Sonic and Tom

"Eeny, meeny, miny... Mayhem!"
―Ivo Robotnik[src]

From his mobile lab, Robotnik controlled the Egg-Tank to capture Tom Wachowski and Sonic the Hedgehog. He launched a harpoon in an attempt to halt them. As the duo's argument escalated, Sonic unintentionally held onto the front of their escaping car. Tom then devised an idea to unplug the harpoon by hitting the brakes. This also boosted Sonic upwards, who eventually performed an unintentional attack upon the tank. Sonic celebrated his victory, yet to find out about Robotnik's backup Badnik. The tank deployed a smaller vehicle, one capable of harming electrical devices with discs. Previously used on a family's car by accident, Sonic used these discs to disable the vehicle. But once done so, the buggy-type Badnik transformed into a unicycle, attempting to pop the car's tires. Tom hit this one, destroying it. Yet again, the Badnik deployed a mini helicopter that acted like a sticky bomb and a destructible laser. It used these capabilities against the two opponents, which relieved Robotnik. He later found a quill from Sonic, one he would later use to empower his Egg-Pod.[2]

Chase of San Francisco[]

"Can I give you one genius piece of advice? Don't run. It'll only hurt more if you do. And it's bad for your joints, they proved it."
―Ivo Robotnik to Sonic the Hedgehog[src]

Using the now completed Egg-Pod, Robotnik hindered Sonic the Hedgehog's escape, confronting him and the Wachowskis with his variety of Flying Eggs. After Sonic pushed the family off the Transamerica Pyramid, Robotnik fired his Badniks' missiles and enabled an enhancement of speed while Sonic was distracted on destroying said robots, wounding Sonic who later saved the falling Wachowskis. With Sonic plummeting from the Transamerica Building, Robotnik descended upon him and advised him to quit running away, despite Sonic challenging him to a race to catch him, traveling through San Francisco, Paris, China, and Egypt.[2]

―Ivo Robotnik and Sonic the Hedgehog[src]

Eventually able to strike his rival down, Robotnik arrived in Green Hills, seemingly victorious. However, he was shortly fought by Tom Wachowski, who told him Sonic was his friend despite his alien nature. Sonic regained consciousness, now equipped with extraordinary amounts of chaos energy, extracting the power of his quill Robotnik used.

Robotnik was now determined to face a being that constantly destroyed his Egg-Pod with his ball form. With a broken-down vehicle, Robotnik charged at Sonic, who, having called Tom to deploy a ring portal to the Mushroom Planet, launched him to the aforementioned place, seemingly never to be seen again.[2]

Life on the Mushroom Planet[]

Eggman declares his comeback

"My grasp on sanity remains... absolute. Isn't that right, Agent Stone? Why don't you get a head start? Do some rock-connaissance! Hahahaha! Rock-connaissance! Come on, that's hilarious! What's the matter with you?!"
―Doctor Eggman to Agent Stone[src]

Following the Skirmish at Green Hills, where Robotnik's banishment from Earth took place, Robotnik's sanity declined while recording daily events in his "Doctor's Log," and he cut his hair short, going bald, while maintaining a large mustache. Along with his rock friend "Agent Stone," he traveled around the Mushroom Planet searching for a chance of return by Christmas.[2]

He wandered about the mushroom-infested realm and came across a blue one. After consuming said blue mushroom, he followed a trail which led to a cave fully covered in blue edibles. Plucking one of them, Robotnik nearly faced near consumption, yet was able to survive the attack by enflaming the chomping fungi. Victorious, he exited the cave, vowing destruction to anything that interrupted his way, and his assured thought of returning to Earth to defeat Sonic the Hedgehog.[9]

Eggman's Escape Plan[]

"If my calculations are correct, and there is no reason to say this, because they always are... This quill... is going to power my masterpiece. Let's light this candle... and see who comes a-knocking."
―Doctor Eggman[src]

While spending his days in exile, Eggman developed an obsession with killing Sonic the Hedgehog. On the 243rd day of his banishment, Eggman developed a mechanism which delivered him distasteful mushroom juice over time.[3] While drinking his mushroom coffee, Eggman had a hallucination that gave him the signal to create an intergalactic beacon to escape.[10] For the rest of the day, he created the beacon, made up of his destroyed Egg-Pod, and used his arch-nemesis' quill to jump-start it, which dispelled chaos energy waves throughout the galaxy. Eggman is then flown out of the mushroom the beacon was based on before being knocked unconscious from the blast.

Knuckles asks where Eggman got the quill from

Later that night, with Eggman remaining unconscious, scavengers looking for the source of the energy blast arrive on the Mushroom Planet, defeated by Eggman's many booby traps in order for Eggman's chance of return. He is halted by an Echidna named Knuckles the Echidna who slowly revealed himself. Knuckles questioned the origin of the quill Eggman had in his possession. Eggman explained where he got it from, and happily obliged to show him the way.[3]

Return to Earth[]

Attack on the Wachowski Residence[]

Through a ring, Eggman arrived at the Wachowski Residence, much to his nemesis', Sonic the Hedgehog, surprise. Eggman assured Sonic that their previous encounter was but an appetizer to his planned retaliation, introducing him to Knuckles the Echidna's fist as Sonic lept to attack him after insulting his family he vowed to take down.

A fight between Sonic and Knuckles transpired as Eggman watched from afar, holding a bowl of popcorn. With Knuckles pinning Sonic to a tree, he demanded the location of the "ultimate power," a mention that interested Robotnik. However, a soon-to-be-ally of Sonic, the savior Tails, rescued Sonic from his possible demise, although Eggman tried to stop them by jumping on the car, seeming to be infested with rabies.[3]

Re-recruiting Agent Stone[]

Catching up in a lawn mower, Eggman stared at his foes flying off into the distance, now calling his sidekick to deploy his upgraded set of an outfit and Badniks. As Knuckles, who followed Sonic and Tails, climbed up a cliff he fell off of, Eggman struck a deal with him, searching along for the Master Emerald if only used to destroy his rival and sealed the deal with a firm handshake, traveling to the Mean Bean Coffee Café with his new Egg-Mobile.

Upon arrival, Eggman tasted one of Stone's famous lattes, but his tastes had been altered due to his supply of mushrooms. Stone shook hands with Knuckles and reformed his coffee shop into Eggman's new base.[3] Eggman learned from Stone that the government erased both records of his identity and his bank account after his disappearance, so he put up a fake image of himself hospitalized to start a crowdfunding scheme.[10]

War for the Master Emerald[]

Spying on Sonic[]

Eggman and his teammates hacked into Sonic the Hedgehog's phone, now able to see private phone messages. As dots, signalizing an incoming message, appeared on screen, Knuckles began to recite them, leading to Stone questioning his relevance. Eggman revealed to Stone that he was a part of his plan of universe domination. The message unveiled, mentioning "home," hence Knuckles believed Sonic and his new ally Tails were in Green Hills. Eggman debunked Knuckles' claim, as he had tracked Sonic and his friend in Siberia. Revealing a holographic image of his nemesis, flickering it, Knuckles destroyed the panel it was on. Before leaving, Eggman denied Knuckles that Stone would accompany them due to his irrelevance, frustrating Knuckles over his ally's disloyalty to his servant.[3]

Stealing the Compass[]

Going on to ditch Stone at the Mean Bean Coffee Café, Eggman and Knuckles the Echidna met Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails in Siberia in an Owl temple with his Badniks, barricading any exits. Launching a missile from his Egg-Mobile, Sonic sent it to the Owl statue trying to hit Eggman's acquaintance. Leaning to an exit, Sonic made use of Eggman's broken Flying Eggs by snowboarding on one of them as Tails flew high, although Eggman constantly fired at him while Tails tried to save Sonic from trouble.

Later, as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles came to a halt, Tails tasered Knuckles in order for Sonic to throw him the Master Emerald Compass, but Eggman snatched it from them, shooting Tails unconscious in the process. He left with Knuckles, looking down upon Sonic's ridiculous sense of friendship as he tried to awaken Tails.[3]

Knuckles the Echidna and Doctor Eggman[src]

From Siberia, Eggman traveled to an island nearby Hawaii, Sonic and Tails' current location, with Knuckles, who placed their stolen Master Emerald Compass into the sand, revealing the Master Emerald Shrine's labyrinth.

Eggman obtains the Master Emerald

With a few Flying Eggs, he and Knuckles raced through a maze plastered with all sorts of booby traps. Eggman eventually decided to pass this maze more conveniently, equipping a device leading them directly to the Master Emerald. They were unfortunately confronted by Sonic, who battled Knuckles for the emerald's safety and protection. Admiring the fight, Eggman approached the sacred relic, ultimately betraying Knuckles. He obtained the Master Emerald nonetheless, teleporting to Green Hills.[3]

―Doctor Eggman to Sonic the Hedgehog[src]

Appearing in the Mean Bean Coffee Café, Eggman met Wade Whipple interrogating Stone, who was tied on a chair. After making them switch places, G.U.N. rushed to the building, with Eggman exiting the coffee shop and unveiling his newly acclaimed powers, ripping scraps of metal throughout Green Hills. Eggman was reunited with Tom Wachowski and the Commander Walters, listening to their threats, but he carried out his greatest creation, taking Stone along with him.

Now having created his finest Badnik, the Giant Eggman Robot, Eggman charged the robot with his Master Emerald abilities, marching toward the town. Unluckily for him, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles had teamed up to stop Eggman, with Sonic and Tails taunting Eggman as they flew past him with their Tornado biplane. Despite ordering Stone, who was at the control panel, to fire missiles, Eggman did it himself as Stone hesitated, successfully hitting Sonic. Knuckles dashed towards Eggman's mechanism, hitting his hand with little effect, and Tails fired bullets upon the robot, also delivering no effect. After Sonic hit the robot with a missile, rendering Stone unconscious, Eggman deployed Badniks and fired lasers towards Team Sonic as they approached him. Sonic, having figured out a plan, garnered Eggman's attention upon himself, leading Eggman to follow him into the forest as Tails and Knuckles were heading to infiltrate the robot.

Eggman is defeated by Super Sonic

Eggman falls to his probable death

Now in the woods, Eggman's eventual plan was questioned, to which Eggman responded he would take over the universe with Sonic exterminated. Firing lasers at Sonic, Eggman eventually heavily wounded Sonic, but was met by Tails, who distracted him before Knuckles extracted the Master Emerald from Eggman's grasp via punching. Eggman had to recharge the mech manually and tried to stop Sonic, who was rescued by Tom and Maddie Wachowski. Nonetheless, Eggman trapped them in a ring of fire, granting him more chance to defeat Sonic once and for all, until Sonic acquired the Chaos Emeralds' power. Although Eggman tried to fight Super Sonic, he was thwarted again as Sonic tipped his now broken machine, leading to his seeming demise. He was later searched for by G.U.N., who had also found links to Project Shadow's secret facility when wiping Eggman's files on their database.[3]

"Stem cells aren't covered by my insurance, but it doesn't matter anymore. My days of evildoing are over. I'm just another streamer fishing for subs, trying to sell tickets on the ad Eggman hype train."
Stone and Doctor Eggman[src]

Fortunately for Eggman, he survived the fall and reunited with Stone,[4] who found his boss seriously injured. Together, they avoided capture by G.U.N. agents. Stone would then take Eggman to Mexico, where he would become engrossed in telenovelas while receiving a multitude of surgeries.[6]

While recovering, Eggman hid in the Mecha Crab, a Badnik stationed under the ocean,[4] where he was bandaged and cared for by Stone until he recovered.[6] Stone kept him informed about surface developments while Eggman struggled with his previous defeat. He fell into a depressive spiral, grew his hair and mustache unchecked, and noticeably gained weight,[4] all while becoming a streamer under the online alias "Huevo Diablo."[6]

―Doctor Eggman[src]

One day, Eggman spent his night watching the telenovela, La Última Pasión, mocking the character Juan when his twin brother, Pablo, betrayed him by being in an affair with his girlfriend, Gabriella. He criticized his hatred towards families, who constantly abandon or betray him while he ate a burrito with the help of a Flying Egg. Bored, he turned on congo music to play with his belly until he was surprised by Stone, who brought in Team Sonic, who expressed surprise at seeing him alive and in a disgusting appearance. Overwhelmed, Eggman berated Stone for bringing in his enemies to the Mecha Crab, as they noted his new lazy and depressed personality.

Despite his boss's anger, Stone explained that they faced another problem: a horde of Flying Eggs was attacking the Chao Garden. Furious at the hijacking of his drones, Eggman realized it was the work of an imposter and vowed revenge against the culprit. He managed to locate the base of the one who had usurped his identity. With their new enemy, Shadow the Hedgehog, also at the base, Sonic reluctantly asked Eggman to form an alliance. Eggman accepted on one condition: Sonic's quill. He agreed and handed it over, suggesting that Eggman consider therapy. Using the quill, Eggman electrocuted himself, regaining his motivation and ordering Stone to prepare for action.

Eggman climbed onto his chair, allowing Stone to shave off all his hair and trim his mustache, restoring his old look. Once finished, he retrieved his damaged suit and headed to his personal dressing room to change, instructing Stone to guard the door. However, upon trying to wear the suit, Eggman discovered it no longer fit due to his weight gain. Frustrated, he demanded that Stone adjust the suit to accommodate his size, suggesting it be tailored in the style of Elvis Presley. Stone hesitated, mentioning he didn’t have enough fabric to make the adjustments. In response, Eggman, without hesitation, tore a piece of Stone’s shirt, declaring it perfect for the modifications.[4]

Shadow and Gerald Robotnik's Revenge Plot[]

Meeting His Grandfather[]

"Magnificent creations, my boy. I borrowed them to lure you here and reunite our family. You see, Ivo... I'm your grandfather, Gerald Robotnik."
―Doctor Eggman and Gerald Robotnik[src]

When his suit was finished, Eggman and Sonic crossed a ring portal that transported them to the abandoned G.U.N. facility. Sonic suggested to Eggman to finish the investigation quickly due to their mutual dislike. As they walked, Eggman pushed Sonic, mockingly calling him "dork-upine", causing a brief argument between the two. Attempting to show off his ingenuity, he began working on unlocking a sealed door, but Knuckles effortlessly knocked it down with a single punch, leaving Eggman visibly displeased. With the path clear, Eggman, Stone and Team Sonic proceeded to enter the facility, finding numerous debris in the area.

Facing three separate hallways, Eggman proposed that Team Sonic split up, intending to have Stone accompany him. However, Sonic rejected the suggestion, insisting on accompanying Eggman himself to keep an eye on him. Reluctantly, Eggman agreed, sarcastically noting that this would give Sonic an opportunity to work through his "trust issues." Sonic, however, firmly reminded Eggman of the two times he had tried to kill him. While exploring, Eggman and Sonic discovered that the facility had once been home to Shadow, who had a family. Sonic wondered aloud if Eggman might have avoided his path to villainy had he experienced a family life. Eggman dismissed the idea, remarking that his appearance and eccentric behavior had always made him undesirable to others. As Eggman dwelled on his thoughts, Sonic noticed Shadow's cryo-pod in the distance and quietly stepped away to investigate, leaving him momentarily lost in his own musings.

Noticing Sonic's absence, Eggman wandered off and found his stacked Flying Eggs, embracing them before encountering Gerald Robotnik, who introduced himself as his grandfather. Initially skeptical, Eggman tested Gerald’s intelligence with advanced questions, all of which Gerald answered flawlessly, even finishing Eggman's sentences. Overwhelmed, Eggman tearfully accepted him as his grandfather, sharing an emotional hug but scolding him for being absent from his life. Gerald explained that he had been imprisoned in a secret prison, unable to contact him, and revealed he had hijacked the drones to orchestrate their reunion. Eggman, astonished but thrilled, eagerly joined his grandfather while marveling at the brilliance they shared.[4]

Betraying Team Sonic[]

Eggman followed Gerald deeper into the facility, observing that Team Sonic had been knocked out and tied up. When Sonic regained consciousness, Eggman and Gerald revealed that they had formed "Team Robotnik" to carry out their plans. They also noticed that Stone was tied up, with Eggman scolding him for his incompetence. He then met Shadow, showing his frustration at the sight of another Hedgehog. When Shadow retrieved the keycard hidden in Tails' backpack, Eggman learned from Gerald that they needed the second keycard to activate the Eclipse Cannon, a devastating weapon. Gerald revealed that the second keycard was located in the G.U.N. Headquarters in London, England, and once the cannon was deployed, they planned to destroy the headquarters as revenge against G.U.N., which piqued Eggman's interest.

Poor Stone

Eggman and Gerald spending time together in a simulation

When the Mecha Crab arrived at the facility, Eggman mockingly thanked his enemies for helping him at his family reunion, again highlighting Sonic's "trust issues." As they left, Shadow left a marble that opened a black hole to absorb the facility along with the team. In the distance, Eggman reacted with amazement at how his grandfather was supposedly able to kill Sonic in a day unlike him. Due to the four-hour journey to London, Gerald suggested to his grandson that they use the time to get to know each other better, leaving Eggman excited to realize that Gerald wanted to spend quality time with him. Motivated by the idea, he and Gerald began imagining a series of events together, such as going to an amusement park, learning to ride a bike, celebrating his birthday, and enjoying holidays like Halloween and Christmas. They even spent time together in a simulation, watching fireworks while sitting on a bench.[4]

Infiltration into G.U.N. Headquarters[]

"You're heartless, son. Rotten to the core. I'm so proud. So now we can just dance right through."
"That sounds like a challenge."
―Doctor Eggman and Gerald Robotnik[src]

Through the sewer, the Mecha Crab transported Team Robotnik to the surface, with Eggman celebrating their successful arrival in London.[4] Eggman greeted the viewers of his live stream and introduced them to the team, Gerald reacting confused while Stone informed him of his ever growing follower count. He then proceeded to advertise the energy drink Berserk.[6] As Shadow grew increasingly desperate for revenge, Gerald ordered him to wait while he and Eggman infiltrated the G.U.N. Headquarters to acquire the final keycard. For the infiltration, Eggman instructed Stone to bring them a pair of spandex suits to help them blend in. As Eggman and Gerald prepared, Stone and Shadow waited by the Badnik. Once ready, the two activated the suits' camouflage mode, allowing them to bypass security and successfully insert a USB to deactivate the force field, making their way deeper into the headquarters.

Eggmen Dance

After evading the G.U.N. agents, Eggman called Gerald names, who then revealed himself and mentioned that he would gut him if they weren't related. Upon entering the laser room, Eggman threw his grandfather, who was able to resist the lasers, verifying that the suits could be stabilized with the lasers, surprising Gerald, who suggested that they can now dance across to the vault, which they did to the rhythm of "Galvanize."[4] After Eggman alerted Gerald of a mean comment one of his viewers sent towards him, Gerald insulting the commenter, the two proceeded to enter the vault[6] as Sonic found them. As soon as they entered, the three realized that the vault was of variable gravity placed by Director Rockwell, who revealed that it trapped Tails, Maddie and Tom Wachowski, who made fun of Eggman's spandex. When Knuckles altered the gravity, Eggman and Rockwell crawled to take the keycard, but she was able to acquire it before Eggman.

Upon getting up, Eggman and Gerald were surrounded by soldiers until Shadow saved them, revealing that he acquired the keycard. Shadow teleported the two to the Space Colony ARK, astounding Eggman by the design, but was more impressed when Gerald revealed their Nanosuits, going so far as to kiss his grandfather's feet. After enlisting and singing about his resemblance to his grandfather, Eggman was called by Stone, who tried to warn him about his grandfather's true plans, however, he believed that Stone was jealous of Gerald, making the decision to fire him and block his contact. He was in charge of placing the keycard, deploying the ARK from the River Thames in view of everyone as they headed into space. Joyful for the team's success, Eggman tried to high-five Gerald, who ignored him, embarrassing the scientist.[4]

"The Eclipse Cannon is about to turn this planet into a flaming pile of rubble. Wiping out everything in a 25,000 mile radius, including us."
"WHAT?! We can't annihilate the Earth. By combining our genius, we can rule humanity together."
"Humanity is a failed experiment. If anyone should know that it's you. All your life you've been rejected by this world. You have nothing down there. No one who cares about you."
"I have you now. We're family. We have each other."
"Oh, Ivo, you're no Maria."
Gerald Robotnik and Doctor Eggman[src]

Later, Eggman noticed Shadow running across the Space Colony ARK and questioned Gerald about his actions. Gerald revealed that Shadow was channeling Chaos Energy into the Eclipse Cannon, not just to exact revenge on G.U.N. but to annihilate all of humanity. Gerald confessed that his true plan was to destroy the Earth as vengeance for the tragic death of his granddaughter, Maria Robotnik. Eggman, disturbed by the revelation, denied the feasibility of such a plan, expressing disbelief and unease at his grandfather's true intentions.

Eggman tries to convince Gerald to rule humanity

Eggman rejected Gerald's plans, proposing that instead of annihilating humanity, they could use their combined brilliance to dominate it. However, Gerald expressed deep resentment towards humanity, calling it a "failed experiment." He reminded Eggman that no one on Earth ever cared for him, causing him to grow up in loneliness as an orphan. Despite this, Eggman pointed out that he now had Gerald and suggested they could build a happy family together. Gerald, however, dismissed the idea, stating that Eggman was not Maria, shattering his feelings. Gerald declared that when Maria died, his family was lost forever, and he had since devised his plan to burn the planet, having nothing left to care about.[4]

Battle for Earth[]

Eggman betrays Gerald

"The reactor core is overloading. It's only a matter of time before it blows."
"So, what does that mean for Earth?"
"A radioactive atmosphere. Rain that kills the crops and melts your flesh. Other than that..."
"We're not done here. You try to stabilize the reactor. Buy me some time. I'll push the station away from Earth before it explodes. This is our last chance, to do the right thing."
―Doctor Eggman and Super Shadow[src]

With a 10-minute countdown to the launch of the Eclipse Cannon, Shadow and Gerald noticed something approaching the Space Colony ARK, with Eggman realizing it was Super Sonic upon noticing his quill turning from blue to golden, and they saw Shadow taken to battle him for seriously injuring Tom. Resentful of his grandfather's truth, Eggman tricked him into hitting him in his neck and headed to the command center to stop the cannon from firing. However, Eggman was ambushed by Gerald, and the two grabbed each other's mustaches tightly before letting go. As their conflict escalated, Gerald generated a nanofist, startling Eggman, who compared him to Green Lantern. Gerald then used the nanofist to deliver a brutal beating to his grandson, leaving Eggman severely shaken.

Eggmen battle

Eggman facing Gerald

Eggman was held back by Gerald, who spanked him as a reprimand. However, Eggman used a nanodriver against Gerald's foot to free himself. Before heading to the command center, Eggman stopped when Gerald deployed a scorpion exoskeleton, forcing him to defend himself. In a mishap, Eggman accidentally created a fence but quickly deployed a mantis exoskeleton to face Gerald. During their fight, Eggman cut off a part of Gerald's mustache, leaving him hanging from a bar on the ARK. Eggman begged Gerald not to kill him, but he stomped on his fingers, sending his grandson falling into space. Before becoming stranded, Eggman was saved by Tails and Knuckles, who arrived in a ring portal. Using Sonic's quill, Eggman electrocuted Gerald's butt, sending him flying into the Chaos Energy field that disintegrated him, joking that his grandfather made a "good bug zapper."

Knuckles, Eggman and Tails seeing Moon's destruction

Eggman, Tails and Knuckles accidentally cut a piece of the Moon

After realigning with Team Sonic, Eggman, Tails, and Knuckles headed to the command center while Super Sonic and Super Shadow worked to prevent the laser from hitting Earth. Realizing the cannon couldn't be stopped from firing, the trio combined their efforts to deflect its trajectory, successfully saving the planet and celebrating their victory with Eggman claiming all the credit. However, they accidentally cut off a piece of the Moon, prompting Eggman to playfully blame Tails and Knuckles. Their celebration was short-lived when they noticed Sonic had lost his transformation, prompting Tails and Knuckles to leave the ARK to rescue their friend.

Eggman's sacrifice

Eggman bids Stone farewell before being consumed by the ARK's explosion

Suddenly, Super Shadow appeared, warning Eggman that the ARK's core was overloading and would cause a radioactive atmosphere on Earth if it exploded. Eggman wanted to give up, but Super Shadow ordered him to stabilize the core while he moved the station away, calling it his last chance to do the right thing. Touched, Eggman wished him luck in Spanish and activated a platform to contain the explosion. As it neared, Eggman used a drone to send a last livestream to Stone, thanking him for being the only one who truly cared about him and calling Stone a "syco-friend." Before the explosion, Eggman made robotic noises, thanking Stone "for nothing." The explosion occurred, seemingly killing Eggman and Shadow, who were later hailed as heroes by Team Sonic for their sacrifice, while Stone said goodbye to his former boss.[4]

Personality[]

"Allow me to clarify: in a sequentially-ranked hierarchy based on level of critical importance, the disparity between us is too vast to quantify."
―Ivo Robotnik to Bennington[src]

Ivo Robotnik is a malevolent human who has been described as "pure, unbridled evil" and a "psychological tire fire." Usually, he comes across as an assertive and self-confident person who does not let his convictions waver in the face of others. However, his genius intellect makes him very narcissistic. Notably, he will declare himself the head of any operation he is involved on, voicing out his supposed superiority to those he comes across without hesitation or consideration, and viewing everyone else around him as inferior and basic. Arrogant and condescending, he thinks that the hardest thing about being "the smartest person in the world is that everyone else is stupid." He similarly prides himself on his intellect and refuses to acknowledge surprise, instead falling back on the excuse that his movements of surprise do not count since he is "expecting not to expect something." These traits mainly stem from Robotnik's own severe inferiority complex which originate from childhood neglect. As a result, he sees himself as an insignificant speck and yearns for acknowledgment and recognition. This often results in him bringing up personal accomplishments in order to make himself feel superior.

Robotnik is also characterized by his quite eccentric behavior. This includes sudden mood swings, mimicking robotic noises and movements, using large and complicated words in conversations to describe a simple situation, and dancing wildly to his own scenarios when he believes he is alone.

Robotnik is not one who tolerates failure and is very quick to lose his temper when it occurs, which prompts his violent mood swings. Lacking any concern about morality and collateral damage to boot, Robotnik is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, as evidenced by the numerous lethal measures he took to capture Sonic and get rid of anyone helping him, and the destruction he caused to San Francisco and the Giza Pyramid Complex. Despite his claims of wanting to improve the Earth, he is happily aware that he is "evil" and thus wishes to achieve improvement the way he envisions it, having for example put a label on his lab's light switch that says, "evil lab." He also has a large chip on his shoulder about being bullied as a child and hates being reminded of how he used to be at the mercy of unintelligent brutes.

Robotnik has also an incredibly sadistic streak, seizing any opportunity to inflict pain upon other people, and relishing every second of it. Notably, he would happily talk about how he wanted to dissect Sonic and "see what makes him tick," and smiled as he threatened to kill Tom while interrogating him and reciting the US Code. He demonstrates not to have an ounce of compassion for his enemies, such as with Knuckles, mocking their fake friendship and celebrating with joy when he believes he had killed Sonic and the Wachowski family.

An egomaniacal and sociopathic misanthrope, Robotnik often voices his distaste for humanity, viewing human beings as inefficient creatures of hubris and desire. Humans similarly bore the doctor to the state that he considers their lives meaningless and therefore he has no desire for having friends, which he is proud of not to have. Robotnik is similarly completely devoid of empathy for any lifeform, be they humans, animals, or those in-between, being unable to understand why Tom would risk everything to help Sonic, and hunting Sonic in order dissect him for his own scientific inquiries. As such, Robotnik hates everybody around him, although he is shown to barely tolerate agent Stone, whom he compliments for his lattes, albeit very aggressively, and intellect. Due to his arrogance and having a mindset based on science and computational thinking, Robotnik sees human society as a computer system and people as programmable toy monkeys, with his approach to both aspects being based science and how to methodically rewrite such "programs" in his own favor without regard for the moral implications. Interestingly enough however, despite Robotnik openly stating that he would not miss Stone during the San Francisco incident, he did create a stand-in of his lackey to keep him company on the Mushroom Planet. This may imply either that he does desire human company on some level, or that he just needs someone to abuse. In his presumed last moments, Eggman finally acknowledged Stone's care, accepting him as his best friend and thanking him for all his service, moving his henchman.

Owning to his hatred of humanity and being a staunch perfectionist, Robotnik values only robotics, which he sees as practical and functional since they always follow their programming and do what they are told. He is especially proud of his Badniks, which he displays affection for and praises them for being relentless and effective. In his own words, his machines are everything to him, and he considers them to be a part of the further evolution of mankind.

Over the course of his hunt for Sonic's power, Robotnik's sanity would degrade to the point where he became completely obsessed with obtaining Sonic's power by any means necessary, eventually becoming willing to place himself in life-threatening situations where he would fail to realize the danger until it was too late. After spending almost three months alone on the Mushroom Planet, his grip on sanity would degrade even further despite his claims to the contrary, as he would talk to a stone as if it was a real person. Eventually, after spending over eight months on the Mushroom Planet, the prolonged isolation has had a significant negative effect on the doctor's psyche, with his sanity having nearly completely disintegrated, and losing what little control and restraint he had, acting completely erratic and psychotic.

Robotnik is also treacherous, which ultimately lead to his downfall; right after he managed to gain access to the Master Emerald, Knuckles, whom he betrayed for the Emerald, formed an alliance with Sonic and Tails and helped to deprive Robotnik of the Master Emerald.

Due to his sanity shattered in his loneliness on the Mushroom Planet, Robotnik survived thanks to his hatred of Sonic, developing an obsession with killing him and taking revenge for everything he treasures and gets angry easily when Sonic insults or deceives him. However, it is his hatred towards the Hedgehog that causes him to fail, as Sonic was able to lure him into chasing him, causing Robotnik to lose the Master Emerald.

During his time in hiding after his last defeat, Eggman developed a lazy attitude, preferring to stay watching novellas and being cared for by Stone. However, his hatred against Team Sonic continued, initially refusing to help them until discovering that his Flying Eggs had been used without his consent, forcing him to return to action and constantly mocking Sonic during their alliance.

When he reunited with his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, who was the one who used the drones, he quickly distrusted him before verifying that he was truly his grandfather, causing him to begin to develop love for him upon meeting a member of his family, revealing his traumas from growing up alone. Eggman happily formed an alliance with Gerald and they began to bond, with the doctor wanting to form a real family with him and distancing himself from Stone, although unlike him, Gerald ignored some of his childish attitudes, stating that he would gut him if they weren't family. The breaking point of their relationship came when Eggman discovered that Gerald would destroy the Earth with the Eclipse Cannon along with them, an idea that Eggman did not like because the two finally met, only for Gerald to demean him and compare him to his deceased granddaughter, Maria.

Disappointed by his grandfather's truth, Eggman had a change of heart and made the decision to save the Earth, betraying his psychotic grandfather who did not think twice, but he was saved by Tails and Knuckles, with whom he finally made a lasting and friendlier alliance for the salvation of Earth, preventing the laser from shooting the planet. When the Space Colony ARK was about to cause a terrible poisoning for the planet, Eggman faithfully agreed to help Shadow the Hedgehog prevent the pieces of the ARK from falling, performing a noble act of redemption when he realized that if he could not dominate the planet, he might save him and transmitted a message to Stone, recognizing him not only as his assistant, but as his friend, showing true affection for him before sacrificing himself as Shadow, presumably dying as a hero.

Former Powers[]

YouWontBeThere

Eggman under influence of the Master Emerald

"I'm more than okay. I'm upgraded! Sinister 3.0. My game is next level!"
―Doctor Eggman[src]
  • Master Emerald Empowerment: After merging himself with the Master Emerald, Robotnik was granted ultimate power and could turn his thoughts into power, being able to summon a kaiju-sized Giant Eggman Robot made out of all types of machinery. However, Knuckles manages to infiltrate the robot and punch the Emerald out of Robotnik, returning him to normal.
    • Bio-Electricity/Chaos Energy Manipulation: His electrical chaos energy can also shock those who come in contact with it, hence Stone evading the bolts when Robotnik was close.
      • Technopathy: The Master Emerald granted him chaos energy, a sort of electrical charge. He could also feel electricity that runs through things and manipulate every electrical object.
        • Techno-Telekinesis: With his electric abilities, he could move objects simply by twiddling his fingers.
        • Mechanical Construct: He could form objects together into one construct.
    • Teleportation: Eggman possessed the ability of sudden travel, having used upon harnessing the emerald's might.
    • Aerokinesis: To develop his Giant Eggman Robot, Eggman had developed a tornado swarming with metallic parts he can build it with.
    • Tails Holograms

Abilities[]

Eggman compares his intelligence to that of his grandfather's

"Five PhDs, IQ off the charts, and his drone-tech is revolutionary!"
Walters[src]
  • Genius-Level Intellect: With an IQ of 300, Robotnik is one of the most brilliant scientists in modern time, even by government standards. He is so intelligent in fact that he was able to accurately determine Sonic's exact height, weight and entire skeletal structure based on nothing but a footprint of his and determine and harness the power of Sonic's alien biology. He was also able to analyze the exact coordinates of Tom Wachowski's truck while it was on the move, simply by deterring the quickest route to San Francisco, the speed of the vehicle, and local weather conditions. With impressive foresight, Robotnik built a series of traps ahead of time on the Mushroom Planet, and each of them are utilized against the three warriors that enter through the ring portal. He managed to measure the timing between each trap in the temple going off, allowing him and Knuckles to dodge them almost effortlessly before deciding to send out a drone to scan for traps and give him exact directions on how to avoid them.
  • Master Engineer: Boasting five PhDs and once described as a "lab rat with teeth," Robotnik possesses intent knowledge of computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering. He created a line of revolutionary robotic drones he called "Badniks," which he controls with his remote control glove. While trapped on the Mushroom Planet with limited resources, He managed to construct an energy beacon from the parts of his Egg-Pod in hopes of producing an energy signal that would attract the attention of those off-world. Robotnik has great skill in setting booby traps out of mushrooms that took out the warriors working with Knuckles. By combining his mastery of engineering with the power of the Master Emerald, Robotnik constructed the Giant Eggman Robot, using G.U.N.'s arsenal and various other components from the environment which he pulled in with his newfound powers.
  • Master Scientist: Robotnik is a genius with overwhelming scientific prowess, particularly with applications of engineering. He is said to have 5 PhDs and has doctorates apparently regarding biology, mathematics, mechanics, physics and robotics. Robotnik boasted to Agent Stone that he could solve cold fusion in his sleep.
  • Master Hacker: Robotnik is an extremely skilled and talented computer programmer and hacker. He threatened Major Bennington to pull up the Major's search history if he doesn't stop looking at him "funny" to assert dominance over him. After learning from Stone that the government dissolved all record of his identity since the former's defeat against Sonic and froze his assets and bank accounts, Robotnik casually hacks into the bank accounts of over a dozen billionaires and siphons funds. He later tracks Sonic's cellphone to find his location.
  • Master Tactician: Robotnik can be a brilliant and cunning strategist when properly motivated to achieve his goals. He has proven to be prepared for virtually any situation he gets into. He had the foresight to design an armed robotic vehicle to deploy a smaller one from its underside in the event it gets tipped on its side, and the smaller vehicle can in turn continue functioning so long as it has even one wheel left. And even if it loses that, its eye can take flight and has some manner of cutting laser. If it stops working in that form, it becomes a sticky bomb that render Sonic unconscious. Robotnik managed to trick three alien warriors into falling into traps he personally made with impressive precision. He exploited Knuckles' determination and gullibility by convincing the echidna that he would help him find the Master Emerald so that he could use it to destroy Sonic. He made sure the Giant Eggman Robot had backup power to keep trucking on in case he somehow managed to lose the Master Emerald.
  • Master Investigator: Robotnik, although applying this talent for his own selfish purposes, has proven himself to be an extraordinarily masterful investigator, with the US government reluctantly entrusting him to investigate the Pacific Northwest blackout caused by Sonic. He masterfully and accurately determine Sonic's exact height, weight and entire skeletal structure based on nothing but a footprint of his and determine and harness the power of Sonic's alien biology.
  • Expert Combatant: He is quite formidable with hand-to-hand combat. Even as a child, he was able to severely injure his school bully, who had to eat through a straw for a year. Into his adult years, he is physically strong enough to toss an over-sized man straight through a window and completely overcome Tom Wachowski. Robotnik claims that he never lost a fight before meeting Tom.
  • Master Marksman: Robotnik is an extremely skilled marksman who makes full use of the laser bolts and missile launchers built in his vehicles. In the chaos-energy quill-powered Egg-Pod, He was able to launch accurate shots at Sonic while flying at speeds comparable to the Hedgehog's own. In his Egg-Mobile, Robotnik shot a missile at Sonic and would have hit him if not for the latter's superhuman reflexes. He managed to hit a hovering Tails while flying away. In the Giant Eggman Robot, Robotnik shot lasers at Sonic and the environment around him to throw the latter off, eventually heavily injuring him.
  • Sonic-robotnik

    Robotnik piloting the Egg-Pod

Master Pilot: Robotnik is a skilled aviation operator with keen intuition and reflexes, being able to expertly pilot his chaos-energy quill-powered Eggpod through the narrow streets of San Francisco at speeds compatible to Sonic's own speed while taking accurate shots at Sonic. He managed to match Tails' flying speed through piloting his Egg Mobile. Even without the Master Emerald powering the Giant Eggman Robot, Robotnik managed to pilot it using its instrument panel and a backup power.
"Here's the sitch: Uninhabited planet, no resources, no supplies, no apparent way home... a lesser man would die here. I'll be home by Christmas."

Sonic's Quill: After Tom Wachowski found it and brought it home out of curiosity, Agent Stone took it for further investigation on the Green Hills Energy Surge. Robotnik rather used it to apply power to his Egg-Pod and enlarge his chances of world domination. During his time on the Mushroom Planet, Eggman used the quill to connect to a beacon and seek help to escape, encountering Knuckles the Echidna. Eggman continued to have the quill, with which he constantly electrocuted himself. When Eggman agreed to form an alliance with Team Sonic through one condition, Sonic gives him one of his quills.

  • Doctor Eggman's Suit: Eggman had a suit he wore when piloting the Egg-Pod. He got a new one when returning to Earth after being trapped on the Mushroom Planet with his old damaged suit on, although his new suit also ended up being damaged after his battle against Team Sonic. When he formed an alliance with the team, Eggman used his damaged suit once again after Stone placed different fabrics to fit his boss's weight.
    • Control Gloves: Eggman owned gloves that can be utilized in many circumstances. He had an old one lost to the First Bank of Walla Walla.
    • Goggles: A pair of welding-like suction goggles with photochromatic lenses that stick both on his for head and in front of his eyes that he uses for special occasions, such as piloting.
    • Doctor's Wristband: Eggman utilized a device that controls much of Ivo Robotnik's machinery, including his Badniks. It has an audio record called the Doctor's Log which records the time Robotnik spends on the Mushroom Planet, recording his daily monologues.

Trivia[]

  • In the video game series, Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is an evil mad scientist adept in both mischief and machinery, holding out hope for his totalitarian regime, the Eggman Empire, which would dominate the world and erect Eggmanland if it wasn't for Sonic and his allies continuously halting Eggman's operations.
  • In Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic mocks Robotnik with the name "Mr. Eggman," alluding to his egg-shaped drones. This is a reference to his video game variant's nickname "Doctor Eggman."
    • For unknown reasons, in the Russian dub, his nickname "Eggman" is avoided at all costs and replaced with "Robotnik."[citation needed]
    • Doctor Eggman is usually called as such in overall Japanese Sonic the Hedgehog sources, but was named Ivo Robotnik in western media. Eggman would become Ivo Robotnik's nickname. Japanese dubs of Sonic Cinematic Universe media refer to Eggman as "Robotnik," like the original English version does.[citation needed]
  • In some instances, Eggman may sound like his video game counterpart, voiced by Mike Pollock. For example, when Robotnik shouts "What's the matter with you!!??" on the Mushroom Planet at the ending scene of Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • Unlike usual depictions of the character, this one doesn't wear his signature blue Pince-nez glasses, but his grandfather Gerald Robotnik however does.
  • This iteration of Doctor Eggman in the first and second movies appears lean and skinny, unlike many others.
  • His game counterpart's Eggman Empire decal appears at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog's credits. The same logo appears on a rock used for making Eggman's mushroom coffee in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • Concept art for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 depicts Eggman in a trench coat that resembles his game counterpart's "modern" design much closer, which jacket he actually got in the third film in a more accurate design compared to the concept art.
    • Despite not making its way into the final product, his new overcoat has four golden buttons at the front similar to the ones of his Adventure-present jacket.
    • The storyboards also depict him in a bodysuit that has a similar design to his one in the original '90s animated incarnations like in the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series and onwards. He has a belt going around the waist with a circular buckle in the center with a line going up to the collar.[12][13]
  • In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, in a scene where Agent Stone looks at various costumes for the doctor, an ensemble based on his original classic design from the original Sonic the Hedgehog games can be seen on the display screen.[14]
  • In Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Novelization, it is stated that Robotnik's middle name is "Gerald," an allusion to the video game character Gerald Robotnik, Ivo's grandfather and the creator of Shadow the Hedgehog.[15]
  • Robotnik's backstory of being a child prodigy is somewhat similar to his Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog counterpart's one. Though for the latter, he was a school bully in his teenagehood whereas it is the other way around for the former where Robotnik himself was bullied at school.
