The Echidna was a group of Echidnas on Mobius. Having formed the magical Master Emerald with the seven Chaos Emeralds, they used it for destruction before having it stolen by Owls, who hid the emerald on Earth. Because Longclaw is the last remaining Owl warrior, the tribe hunted her for information upon the emerald, and ended up killing her. During this attack, several members have died.

Several years prior, the Echidna used seven Chaos Emeralds, relics of great power, to form the Master Emerald and used it to destroy armies with its great power. However, the Owls, who thought that no one needed such power, took the Master Emerald away from the Echidnas, which sparked a war between the two species.[2]
"My tribe was on the verge of its greatest victory. The last of the Owl warriors have been located, soon Longclaw's emerald secrets would be ours. But my father stopped me from joining the fight. He said my moment to honor our tribe would come, but it was not this moment. Those were the last words he spoke to me. I never saw him again."
In 2013, the Echidna hunted for Longclaw in order to receive answers regarding the Master Emerald. When they arrived at Longclaw's home, they prepared an ambush. They took aim at the door, and broke in through the building's windows. As Longclaw realized the danger the two were placed in, she flew out of the house above the forest, carrying Sonic. Pachacamac, a member of the tribe, struck her in the side with an arrow, causing her to plummet to the ground. As the tribe ran directly towards them, Longclaw gave Sonic a bag of rings, and told him to run through one to Earth. From Earth, Sonic watched Longclaw be surrounded by the enclosing tribe. He attempted to run back through the ring, but it disintegrated before he could reach it.[3]
Sometime during this event, most of the members have died, including Knuckles the Echidna's father, whose son went on to try and honor his tribe by searching for the emerald.[2]
The last surviving member, Knuckles the Echidna, made multiple attempts at honoring his fallen tribe, once obtaining the fabled Flames of Disaster in a galaxy-wide quest from the treacherous Iblis.[4]10 years later, Knuckles began to look for Sonic the Hedgehog, whom he claimed to be "key to everything" in his search for the Master Emerald.[1] He soon partnered with Doctor Eggman in his mission to dispose of Sonic after finding him on Earth, but was betrayed when Eggman took the emerald for himself. Defeating Eggman, Knuckles joined a new order of heroes with Sonic and Tails protecting the emerald after those who have passed on to the Great Battleground in the Sky, as Knuckles stated upon the team's formation.[2]
In 2024, Knuckles sought a purpose now that the previous threat had been thwarted and was approached by the spirit of the late Pachacamac. In order to prosper the legacy of the tribe, Pachacamac ordered Knuckles to train and guide Green Hills, Montana sheriff Wade Whipple in the tribe's ancient ways, despite Knuckles' initial doubts.[5] During Knuckles' new quest, Whipple was approached by Pachacamac in the Great Battleground in the Sky, where he was taught of Knuckles' quest regarding the Flames of Disaster.[4]
Description: Knuckles is an extraterrestrial Echidna who honors his tribe by searching for the key to re-obtain the Master Emerald, Sonic the Hedgehog, who he searched for throughout the universe. After a short-lived alliance with the villainous Doctor Eggman, he teamed up with Sonic and Tails and defeated Eggman in the end. His new purpose is to protect the Master Emerald from anyone who tries to obtain it and use the emerald for themselves.

In the video game series, the Knuckles Clan was an ancient tribe of echidnas lead by Chief Pachacamac who inhabited the Mystic Ruins approximately 3,000 years ago. Faced with guardian Chaos' wrath in their attempt to steal the Chaos Emeralds, the group would eventually go extinct. The sole survivor was Knuckles the Echidna, the last guardian of the Master Emerald.
