Echidnas are one of the several intelligent species on Mobius. They are a race of anthropomorphic extraterrestrials that share some resemblance with Earth's native echidnas.
The tribe discovered the Master Emerald by combining the Chaos Emeralds. After their power was taken from them by the Owl warriors, the tribe vowed to retrieve it, including Knuckles, seeking to honor his tribe.

The Echidna create the Master Emerald

In ancient times, a tribe of Echidnas assembled the seven Chaos Emeralds, creating the Master Emerald, an item they could use to wield great power. Destroying countless armies, the Owls took the emerald from the Echidnas, going to war in order to retrieve it.[2]
Attack on Longclaw's Home[]
- "My tribe was on the verge of its greatest victory. The last of the owl warriors have been located, soon Longclaw's emerald secrets would be ours. But my father stopped me from joining the fight. He said my moment to honor our tribe would come, but it was not this moment. Those were the last words he spoke to me. I never saw him again."

By 2013, the Echidna ambushed Longclaw, the last of the Owls, when spotting her apprentice Sonic the Hedgehog run through the island. In an attempt to escape, tribe leader Pachacamac struck Longclaw down when in flight, prompting the others to charge at her while she shields a ring portal to Earth.[1]
Knuckles the Echidna, a young warrior, never saw his father or the rest of the tribe again after this day, seeking to honor his tribe by finding the Master Emerald himself. He went on a quest years later to find Longclaw's apprentice, eventually meeting Doctor Eggman, who helped him in his search.[2][3]
Race to the Master Emerald[]

In this team-up with Doctor Eggman, he and Knuckles followed Sonic the Hedgehog and his ally Tails, eventually fighting Sonic in an underwater Labyrinth by the Master Emerald Shrine. Finishing the battle, Knuckles took note of Eggman stealing the emerald for himself, using its power to wreak havoc in Green Hills. When he teleported to Green Hills, the Labyrinth started falling apart, with Knuckles, pinned down by a pillar, being rescued from drowning by Sonic. He came back for him when Sonic himself nearly drowned.
No longer being alone, Knuckles formed an alliance with Sonic and Tails against Doctor Eggman, forming a new order to protect the Master Emerald from those who plan to use it for evil, ending the need to honor his tribe.[2]

The Echdinas are anthropomorphic animals that come in different shades of red, known for their dreadlocks and spiked knuckles on their gloves. They wear gloves as to protect their knuckle bones protruding out of their hands.[4] A primitive tribe, the Echidnas are violent warriors trained in various forms of lethal combat since birth, covered in tribal garments, including feathered masks to hide their identities, and armed with spears, arrows and bows, and nets.
Ever since the Master Emerald, what bestowed them ultimate power, was stolen by the Owls, the Echidnas went to war with them, fighting for centuries over the emerald. Knuckles the Echidna destined himself to restore the honor to the tribe, only for him to join a new order that protects the emerald instead.

Trivia[]
- In the video game series, most Echidnas were part of the Knuckles Clan, a tribe of Echidnas who, 3000 years ago, thrived in what would become the Mystic Ruins. The Echidnas would be wiped out when protecting the Master Emerald from Chaos, having Knuckles the Echidna remain with it on Angel Island.
