The Eclipse Cannon was a laser cannon built into the Space Colony ARK created by Gerald Robotnik and used by Team Robotnik for their revenge plot.

To secure his release from imprisonment, Gerald Robotnik struck a deal with the Guardian Units of Nations to design a powerful weapon capable of targeting and destroying anything within a large radius. While designing the cannon, Robotnik intentionally designed the weapon as part of his hidden agenda to exact revenge on humanity for the death of his granddaughter, Maria Robotnik. Once the weapon was completed, G.U.N. granted Robotnik full independence, unaware of his true intentions.[1]

Super Sonic and Super Shadow head to the Eclipse Cannon

In 2024, Team Robotnik successfully acquired the two Eclipse Cannon keycards. These were installed in the control center of the Space Colony ARK, enabling the station to launch into space and activate the cannon. Driven by the tragic memory of Maria's death, Shadow the Hedgehog raced around the ARK, infusing it with Chaos Energy and successfully charging the cannon's systems. As a result, Robotnik initiated a 10-minute countdown to fire the cannon's laser at the Earth. When the cannon reached the end of its countdown, the laser finally fired. However, Super Sonic and a redeemed Super Shadow joined forces to prevent the cannon from striking the planet.
The Eclipse Cannon accidentally splits the Moon
While Super Sonic and a redeemed Super Shadow worked to stop the laser from striking the Earth, Tails, Knuckles the Echidna, and Doctor Eggman, who betrayed Robotnik, rushed to the controls and successfully redirected the laser's trajectory just before Sonic lost his super transformation. The laser was diverted but accidentally split a piece of the Moon. However, the ARK's core began to overload, prompting Eggman and Super Shadow to sacrifice themselves to prevent a radioactive atmosphere on the planet. They managed to contain the explosion, ensuring the ARK and the cannon were destroyed far from Earth.[1]

Gerald Robotnik designed the Eclipse Cannon to be G.U.N.'s greatest weapon, an orbital laser capable of massive destruction. According to Robotnik, it could wipe out "everything" in a 25,000 mile radius. As demonstrated when redirected by Doctor Eggman and Shadow the Hedgehog, the Eclipse Cannon was able to slice through a portion of the Moon with no difficulty.
Trivia[]
- In the video game series, Gerald Robotnik created the Eclipse Cannon to defend Earth from the Black Arms upon their eventual return with the power of the Chaos Emeralds. He however repurposed it as a means to destroy the planet after Maria's death. The cannon would later be used by Gerald's grandson Doctor Eggman, blowing off a chunk of the Moon with it.
- In the video game series, the cannon's laser would be fired out of its "nose," the lower half of the Space Colony ARK being based on Gerald's face. The Sonic Cinematic Universe, however, places these design details solely on the ARK.
