- "This is one of two keys required to launch the Eclipse Cannon. The other is locked inside G.U.N. Headquarters. Once we have both, I will take rightful control of my weapon."
- ―Gerald Robotnik[src]
The Eclipse Cannon Keycards were keys to activating the Eclipse Cannon built by Gerald Robotnik for the Guardian Units of Nations.
History[]
Eclipse Cannon's Creation[]
- "In exchange for my freedom, I gave G.U.N. the most powerful weapon man kind has ever seen. Capable of delivering a precision strike anywhere on Earth."
- ―Gerald Robotnik[src]
After being imprisoned following an accident in his laboratory, Gerald Robotnik struck a deal for his freedom with the leaders of G.U.N. to design the plans for a powerful weapon, the Eclipse Cannon. This led to the creation of two keycards, one kept under the custody of Commander Walters and the other stored at the G.U.N. Headquarters. However, unbeknownst to G.U.N., Robotnik secretly planned to use the cannon, once completed, along with the keycards to destroy Earth as revenge for his granddaughter, Maria Robotnik.[1]
Shadow and Gerald Robotnik's Revenge Plot[]
Attack on Walters[]

Team Sonic receives Walters' keycard before his death
- "Sonic... Take this."
"What is it?"
"A key, to the most powerful weapon G.U.N. has ever built. You're the only one I trust to keep it safe." - ―Walters and Sonic the Hedgehog[src]
In 2024, Walters and Team Sonic met in the Chao Garden, Tokyo, to discuss Shadow the Hedgehog before being ambushed by the Flying Eggs, which had been hijacked by Robotnik to launch an attack on Walters and kill him. Before dying, Walters entrusted his keycard to Sonic the Hedgehog, asking him not to give it to anyone. Honoring his final wish, the team hid the keycard in Tails' backpack.[1]
Search for Gerald Robotnik[]

Robotnik gets the first keycard
- "Where is it?"
"Ha! Good one, Hot Topic. Do you really think we'd be that stupid to bring the key right to you? Yep, we're that stupid." - ―Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog[src]
While exploring Robotnik's laboratory, Team Sonic was captured by Shadow, who chained them to a tube in the facility. There, the team discovered that Doctor Eggman had joined forces with Robotnik, who was revealed to be his grandfather. Robotnik ordered Shadow to retrieve the keycard, which he managed to take from their Tails' backpack. After receiving the keycard, Robotnik explained to Eggman that it would activate the Eclipse Cannon to destroy the G.U.N. Headquarters in London, England, where the second keycard was located. Team Robotnik then departed aboard the Mecha Crab to retrieve it.[1]
Infiltration into G.U.N. Headquarters[]

"Walters" gets the second keycard
- "We have both keys. Where's your little project?"
"It's closer than you think, my boy." - ―Doctor Eggman and Gerald Robotnik[src]
After infiltrating the vault at the G.U.N. Headquarters, Sonic raced against Eggman and Robotnik to reach the keycard. However, they were stopped by the variable gravity system set up by Director Rockwell, who retrieved the keycard and explained her trap to prevent anyone from taking it. When Knuckles the Echidna accidentally disrupted the system, the keycard fell to the floor, prompting Eggman and Rockwell to crawl toward it. Just as Sonic deactivated the gravity system, Rockwell managed to seize the keycard. Before Rockwell took her, Tom Wachowski, disguised as Walters, tricked her and managed to take the keycard.

However, Shadow teleported in and captured Tom, mistaking him for Walters. He struck Tom in the chest to retrieve the keycard, only realizing his mistake afterward. Shadow then teleported away to deliver the keycard to Robotnik, taking both Robotnik and Eggman to the Space Colony ARK. As they prepared themselves with their nanosuits, Robotnik gave Eggman the honor of inserting the keycard, allowing the ARK to rise from the River Thames. Before Eggman could attempt to stop the firing of the Eclipse Cannon, Robotnik activated a scorpion exoskeleton and destroyed the keycards.[1]
Capabilities[]
The Eclipse Cannon Keycards had the ability to activate the command center of the Space Colony ARK, which would in turn power the Eclipse Cannon.
