Hedgehogs are one of the several intelligent species on Mobius. They are a race of anthropomorphic extraterrestrials that share some resemblance with Earth's native hedgehogs.

Around the 1970s, a powerful being crashed in Oklahoma in a meteorite. As a result, a top-secret project to study the alien Hedgehog, eponymously named Shadow the Hedgehog, was authorized by the Guardian Units of Nations under the supervision of Gerald Robotnik.^[2]

A blue Hedgehog, named Sonic, was born on Mobius and raised by the last Owl warrior Longclaw. In 2013, Sonic was chased off of his home planet by the Echidna and relocated to Earth by Longclaw, living a secret life covert from the planet's native Humans near Green Hills, Montana for the next ten years until he inadvertently caused a power blackout throughout the Pacific Northwest, attracting the attention of the U.S. government who hired Ivo Robotnik to assist in investigating the anomaly. Sonic defeated Robotnik and moved into Tom and Maddie Wachowski's residence, referring to them as his surrogate family.^[3] He later teamed up with an Echidna named Knuckles and a Fox named Tails to form an order and protect the fabled Master Emerald.^[2]

Sonic and his team confronted Shadow the Hedgehog by 2024, another Hedgehog similar in appearance to Sonic that acted upon his revenge plot with Gerald Robotnik to destroy Earth in memory of Maria Robotnik, a friend that died at the hands of the Guardian Units of Nations 50 years ago. After Shadow had injured his surrogate father, Sonic fought him, their fight eventually subsiding as they discussed their mutual grief. They teamed up to destroy the Eclipse Cannon's devastating laser, Shadow surviving the explosion of the space station helming the cannon after pushing it away.

Sometime after these events, Sonic met a female Hedgehog that rescued him from a swarm of robotic doppelgängers, designed to resemble Sonic.^[4]

Hedgehogs are anthropomorphic animals, fairly resembling hedgehogs from Earth. They have a set of seven quills on the back of their head, and three on their back, female hedgehogs such as Amy instead have a set of around five quills on the back of their head and also tend to have bangs on their head.

Hedgehogs are known for their super speed, able to accelerate faster than the speed of sound. Their speed is powered by chaos energy, which is unleashed as an energy burst while under pressure and in motion. They also have the ability to curl up into a ball, either to attack or defend themselves from others.
