"Japan is one of my favorites. It's so pretty here! I wish I could just run around without— No... uh..."
Sonic the Hedgehog[src]

Japan, officially the State of Japan, is an island country in East Asia.

History[]

Raid of Gerald Robotnik's Laboratory[]

Shadow Stasis

Shadow is placed into stasis on Prison Island

In the 1970s, an alien creature named Shadow the Hedgehog crash-landed in Oklahoma, United States of America and would later be examined by the Guardian Units of Nations. By 1974, succeeding G.U.N.'s raid of the laboratory Shadow inhabited, Captain Walters had the subject placed into cryostasis on Prison Island in Tokyo Bay.[1]

Sonic's Trip[]

Japan

Sonic arrives in Japan

Traveling around the world, Sonic the Hedgehog found himself in Japan. Mentioning how pretty it is, Sonic wished he'd be able to run around without causing trees to lose their leaves. He causes this by running to his next location.[2]

Shadow's Reawakening[]

Battle of Tokyo[]

Shadow escapes from Prison Island

In the fifty years of Shadow's stasis on Prison Island, he had been reliving what lead to G.U.N.'s initial raid. Security monitor Kyle Lancebottom noticed that Shadow was waking up, alerting a troop of soldiers that surrounded Shadow. Shadow however broke free, thwarted the soldiers and escaped the penitentiary,[1] skating towards the Rainbow Bridge. Scaling the bridge, Shadow noticed that G.U.N. was on his tail, thus skating down a suspension wire to move on to Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo.

Shadow encounters Sonic on Shibuya Crossing

Bumping into a civilian that reminded him of his deceased friend Maria,[3] Shadow found himself surrounded by G.U.N. and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. Shadow effortlessly defeated the authorities and was met by Team Sonic, a team of extraterrestrials lead by Sonic who were called to Tokyo to neutralize a threat. Having seen the team exit a G.U.N. Helicopter, Shadow attempted to dismiss them, only to be attacked by Knuckles the Echidna. Shadow defeated him and the rest of the team, equipping a laser pistol and motorbike before making his escape.

Tokyo Lightning

Sonic and Shadow cause a blackout in Tokyo

Sonic followed Shadow upon Tokyo's busy roads, avoiding the lasers shot by Shadow's pistol and oncoming traffic. When Sonic hangs onto the bike, Shadow approaches level crossing barriers, avoiding them by teleporting towards the Tokyo Skytree. As Shadow bashed against a spindashing Sonic while driving up the Skytree, Sonic fell on top of the building when Shadow ascended. Both Hedgehogs charge up their chaos energy and punched each other, briefly depleting Tokyo of its power. Sonic's teammates follow him to free Sonic, handcuffed to the building's railings. When suggested they regroup, Tails gets an idea where to do so.[1]

Attack on Walters[]

STH3 EW1

Team Sonic sit in the Chao Garden

Tails brings Team Sonic to the Chao Garden, a Japanese food establishment where their picture is taken by a waitress. After Knuckles threatens some of the Chao mascots, Tails is mocked for being compared to Detective Pikachu by young attendees. Commander Walters eventually accompanied the team, explaining Project Shadow and Shadow's backstory before the restaurant was suddenly ambushed by Flying Eggs when a live show started.

The Chao Garden is ambushed by Flying Eggs

Amidst the destruction, Team Sonic were targeted by the drones as people evacuated the building. Stone arrived with a motorcycle and used his gauntlets to disable them. Before chasing Stone, Team Sonic were given a keycard to the Eclipse Cannon in Walters' final moments, leaving disguised as the Chao. Meanwhile, G.U.N. Director Rockwell, whom recruited Team Sonic for the Tokyo mission, arrived at the scene and recovered the picture taken of them in Walters' pocket.

Team Sonic come across the Mecha Crab at a dock

Team Sonic stayed on Stone's trail until he finally stopped by a dock, denying any involvement from him or Doctor Eggman in the ambush and inviting him inside the Mecha Crab to prove it. Eggman had been hiding inside the Crab[1] following his surgeries he underwent in Mexico after the battle against the Giant Eggman Robot.[4] When alerted of the hijacking of his drones, Eggman tracked the location of the culprit, forming an alliance to go after him.[1]
