James Eugene "Jim" Carrey portrayed Ivo Robotnik/Doctor Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

He also portrayed Gerald Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

He was interviewed for the documentary Thrills & Quills: The Making of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

  • On April 1, 2022, Carrey announced his film industry retirement plans, considering continuing if "the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see." However, producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher confirmed that Carrey's character, Doctor Eggman, would not be recasted in case Carrey did retire.[1][2]
    • Carrey ultimately returned to star in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.[3] While he revealed he never considered leaving the film franchise specifically, Carrey was sent a script of the film printed in 24-karat gold ink in response to his statement.[4]
  • Carrey had expressed interest in wearing a fat suit for his role as Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.[5][6] He eventually wore one in the latter.
  • For his role as Gerald Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Carrey helped design the prosthetics.[7]
