Mobius[1] is a planet in the universe home to many anthropomorphic animals. According to Longclaw, Mobius is located "on the far side of the universe" in comparison to Earth.
History[]
Attack on Longclaw's Home[]
- "This world is on the far side of the universe. You should be safe there."
- ―Longclaw to Sonic the Hedgehog[src]
Sonic the Hedgehog was raised by Longclaw, the last standing Owl warrior, on an isolated island. One day, while Sonic was running across the island, he was unknowingly tracked by a tribe of Echidnas[2] seeking Longclaw’s secrets about the powerful Master Emerald.[3] When the Echidnas attacked, Longclaw sacrificed herself to ensure Sonic’s escape, sending him to Earth through a ring portal.[2] The Echidna tribe was wiped out, except for one young warrior, Knuckles, who was instructed by his father to stay behind. Determined to restore his tribe’s honor, Knuckles set out to hunt for Sonic and reclaim the Master Emerald.[3][4]
Tails' Quest[]
- "They say no one has visited here for years out of respect. This is where Sonic was raised. But it's so much more than that. This is sacred ground... the place where Longclaw fell."
- ―Tails[src]
Tails began searching for Sonic the Hedgehog after detecting his presence on his computer screen.[3] His journey first led him to the island where Sonic once lived. Exploring Longclaw’s former home, Tails discovered a shrine dedicated to her memory and a drawing made by Sonic. Using the Chaos Energy signature from the drawing, he continued his search, determined to find Sonic.[4]

Trivia[]
- In the video game series, Earth is Sonic's home planet. In other instances, it is referred to as Sonic's world. Behind the video games' scenes, there was confusion regarding the fact that Sonic's world and Earth were different planets or not. It has since been clarified that they are the same.
- The name Mobius is used in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as its successors, the Sonic the Hedgehog TV series and Sonic Underground. It is also used in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series by Archie Comics, as well as Sonic the Comic by Fleetway Publications. This name is also used in Sonic Spinball, the only Sonic the Hedgehog video game to ever refer to it as such. These products made use of the name when following early Sonic canon.
- The Sonic the Hedgehog Cinematic Universe marks the first time "Mobius" was referred to as Sonic's planet since 1999's Sonic Underground.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Mobius is never referred to as such in the films, but was mentioned by Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2's film novelization. Pat Casey claimed that the film's writing team were forbidden from naming Sonic's home planet.[5]
- According to a storyboard for the second film, Knuckles mentioning Mobius in the novelization was seemingly based off the former's script.[6]
- Some trailers for Sonic the Hedgehog show him running through his island at the age of 13 -14.[7] In the final version of the film, Sonic leaves the island ten years earlier as a child and does not come back since.
- Casey stated that he is uncertain whether Tails comes from a different planet or that of Mobius, like Sonic and Knuckles.[8]
- With this in mind, it is entirely possible that not every extraterrestrial Sonic character hails from Mobius.
- In most projects based on early Sonic canon, the extraterrestrials from Mobius are called "Mobians." The demonym has not been used within the Sonic the Hedgehog Cinematic Universe.
