- "This place gives me the creeps."
"Relax. That popsicle hasn't moved in fifty years." - ―Prison Guard and Kyle Lancebottom[src]
Prison Island is a maximum-security federal prison near Tokyo Bay where Shadow the Hedgehog was kept in cryostasis.
History[]
Containing Shadow the Hedgehog[]

Shadow is placed into cryostasis
- "With the program canceled, Shadow was a loose end no one knew how to deal with. Too dangerous to be walking free, too valuable to destroy. So, I had him placed into stasis. Indefinitely."
- ―Walters to Team Sonic[src]
After G.U.N. raided the research facility where Shadow the Hedgehog was being studied, Captain Walters deemed Shadow valuable but too dangerous to remain free. Walters ultimately decided to place Shadow into stasis on Prison Island, ensuring his containment under strict security measures.[1]
Escape from Prison Island[]

- "Is that normal?"
"No... he's waking up." - ―Prison Guard and Kyle Lancebottom[src]
In 2024, fifty years after Shadow the Hedgehog’s imprisonment, Gerald Robotnik infiltrated Prison Island’s security systems to release Shadow as part of his plan to enact revenge on the world. After Shadow awoke and was freed from his cryo-pod, an army of soldiers surrounded him. Shadow instantly attacked the soldiers, quickly incapacitating them and escaping the facility through an explosion that led outside. Shadow then skated across the Pacific Ocean towards Tokyo.[1]
Trivia[]
- In the video game series, like Gerald Robotnik, Shadow the Hedgehog was held captive on Prison Island, the Guardian Units of Nations' secret military base, until Doctor Eggman came to free him from his cryo-capsule.
