Eggman betrays Team Sonic to team up with Gerald

After Doctor Eggman and Stone allied themselves with Team Sonic to search for Shadow the Hedgehog and the man posing as Eggman, the group traveled to an abandoned G.U.N. facility, where after getting separated from Sonic, Eggman ran into Gerald Robotnik. Gerald had previously come across Shadow to recruit him in his revenge plot against humanity, having him eliminate Team Sonic and Stone. Questioning his apparent 'relationship' with him, he embraced him in a hug and decided to betray Team Sonic and officially form Team Robotnik.
The two Robotniks then reunited with Stone and Shadow and added them to their team before stealing one of the launch keys to the Space Colony ARK. Gerald then determined that the second launch key was being stored in G.U.N.'s headquarters in London, England. The group then departed, leaving Team Sonic to die from an orb containing a black hole. However, they managed to survive, unbeknownst to Team Robotnik.[3]

En route to Guardian Units of Nations Headquarters, Gerald invited Eggman make up for lost time aboard the Mecha Crab. Within virtual reality, they rode a rollercoaster in "Eggmanland." Eggman was taught how to ride a bicycle and fell.[3] Bruising his knee, Eggman broke down in tears, his weeping disrupted by Gerald's application of a patch bandage upon his mouth.[2] Eggman subsequently had his birthday celebrated, Gerald lighting the birthday candles with a flamethrower. The two later went trick-or-treating, Eggman destroying a house's porch with his robot costume. He also spotted Gerald placing presents under a Christmas tree dressed as Santa Claus, pouncing upon him in joy.[3] In a scenario in which Eggman is a boy scout, he received a new badge, scout leader Gerald flicking Eggman's nose, the latter kicking Gerald in response. In bear pajamas, a nervous Eggman had a bedtime story read to him by Gerald, who shut off the lights and turned them back on again with a scary mask on, frightening Eggman.[2] Eggman and Gerald lastly watched the fireworks while eating cotton candy, completely ignoring Stone, who brought them two lattes.[3]
Shadow describes the gravitas of his revenge plot to Stone
Team Robotnik eventually arrived in London, exiting from the Mecha Crab on the Shad Thames.[3] There, Eggman greeted the viewers of his live stream and introduced them to the team, Gerald reacting confused as to who he is talking to. After promoting the energy drink Berserk,[2] Gerald calmed Shadow's impatient thirst for vengeance as Eggman had Stone reveal the spandex suits he created for him and Gerald to infiltrate G.U.N. HQ with. The two left camouflaged while the others were ordered to stay behind in the Mecha Crab, inserting a drive within the server room before nearing the laser hall.[3] Meanwhile, Shadow was watching La Última Pasión as Stone prepared guacamole, Shadow subtly revealing his and Gerald's true intentions. The Mecha Crab, hiding in the sewers, was flushed away by Tails via his control of G.U.N. HQ's systems.
After hiding behind G.U.N. photos[3] and flags,[2] the Robotniks danced through the laser hall after Gerald discovered that the spandex suits were laser resistent.[3] Afterwards, Gerald was told he was insulted on Eggman's livestream, Gerald making an insult himself towards the commenter.[2] Moving on to the vault, the Robotniks were apprehended by Sonic, running inside only to be stuck by the floor. G.U.N. Director Rockwell revealed that the tiles upon the floor altered gravity.
After Sonic followed and was affected by gravity that propelled him upward, a swarm of G.U.N. soldiers accompanied Rockwell, who believed that Sonic was trying to take the launch key to use the power of the ARK. Knuckles then broke inside accidentally altered the gravity of the room, causing chaos as Eggman tried to steal the launch key, though he failed. After the gravity in the room was restored, Eggman and Gerald were surrounded by the soldiers. Shadow teleported to the room and saved them both, revealing to them that he had stolen the keycard from Tom Wachowski disguised as Walters, Sonic attending to him having reminded of him and his fallen friend Maria Robotnik. He then teleported them to the Space Colony ARK, with Eggman astounded by its design. But was more impressed when Gerald revealed their Nanosuits, going so far as to kiss his grandfather's feet.

After singing about his resemblance to his grandfather, Eggman got a call from Stone. Who warned Eggman not to trust his grandfather and that his true plan was far worse than he was letting on. However, Eggman promptly fired Stone and cut contact with him as he believed he was just jealous of his relationship with his grandfather. The team then deployed the Space Colony ARK into space, with Eggman trying to high-five Gerald, who ignored him, embarrassing the scientist.[3]

Once the Space Colony ARK was launched into space, Eggman questioned his grandfather on what Shadow was doing while he was running across the interior of the ARK. Gerald then reveled that Shadow was channeling his Chaos Energy into the Eclipse Cannon in order to completely destroy the Earth and kill everyone and everything, including himself, Eggman, and Shadow on the ARK. Eggman, completely shocked by this revelation, tried to convince his grandfather about how insane his plan was and how they didn't need to destroy the Earth. As with their high intelligence, they could simply conquer the planet and rule humanity. However, Gerald rejected Eggman's proposal. Insisting that humanity was a "failed experiment" before reminding Eggman that he had no one on Earth who cared about him so it didn't matter. Eggman refuted this by telling Gerald that they had each other, before Gerald dismissed the idea, stating that Eggman was no Maria, shattering his feelings. Gerald declared that when Maria died, his family was lost forever, and he had since devised his plan to burn the planet, having nothing left to care about.
With this knowledge in mind, Eggman decided to betray Gerald, doing so once Super Sonic arrived to the ARK and began fighting Shadow for hurting Tom. As the two Hedgehogs fought across the planet it became evident they were evenly matched with the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Seeing this, Eggman began his betrayal by hitting Gerald in his neck and headed to the command center to stop the cannon from firing. However, Eggman was ambushed by Gerald, and the two grabbed each other's mustaches tightly before letting go. As their conflict escalated, Gerald generated a nanofist, startling Eggman, who compared him to Green Lantern. Gerald then used the nanofist to deliver a brutal beating to his grandson, leaving Eggman severely shaken.
Betraying Gerald, Super Shadow destroys his Gun Hunters
As Sonic and Shadow continued fighting, Sonic punched Shadow towards the Moon. Knocking him out of his super form and preparing to kill him. But he stopped, realizing that it was futile and so Super Sonic sat down in disappointment, understanding that there are no winners in vengeance. Shadow then began to talk about Maria and how her death was all he had known, while Sonic felt the same in regard of Longclaw's passing. He revealed that he replaced his grief with the love for he had for her, urging Shadow to do the same. Shadow argued that his blind rage for revenge gave him no other choices. However, Sonic extended a hand out to him and told him that he always had a choice, even if making the right one was hard. Shadow accepted Sonic's words and the two joined forces to save the Earth. Both turning back into their Super Forms and racing towards the ARK, tearing through the Gun Hunters that Gerald had dispatched.
Back on the ARK, Eggman was being held by Gerald, who spanked him as a reprimand. However, Eggman used a nanodriver against Gerald's foot to free himself. Before heading to the command center, Eggman stopped when Gerald deployed a robotic scorpion exoskeleton, forcing him to defend himself. In a mishap, Eggman accidentally created a fence but quickly deployed a robotic mantis exoskeleton to face Gerald. During their fight, Eggman cut off a part of Gerald's mustache, leaving him hanging from a bar on the ARK. Eggman begged Gerald not to kill him, but he refused to help and threw his grandson into space. Before becoming stranded or killed, Eggman was saved by Tails and Knuckles, who arrived in a ring portal. Using Sonic's quill, Eggman electrocuted Gerald's butt, throwing him into the Chaos Energy field that disintegrated him and effectively ended Team Robotnik as Eggman joked that his grandfather made a "good bug zapper."[3]

- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller referred to the team as "Team Dark" in an interview with Nerd Reactor.[4] In the video game series, Team Dark is a group debuting in Sonic Heroes that consists of Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat and E-123 Omega and occasionally allies with the Guardian Units of Nations.
