The War for the Master Emerald was a major conflict between the Owls and Echidnas for the possession of the hailed and extremely powerful Master Emerald, which took centuries and ages to end.
Background[]
The Echidna creates the Master Emerald
- "Ages ago, a fearsome group of warriors known as the Echidnas forged the seven Chaos Emeralds into the most unstoppable weapon ever created."

Centuries ago, the Echidna infused all seven Chaos Emeralds into one, forming the almighty Master Emerald, a relic capable of immense power, which is able to create and destroy civilizations to those who yield or infuse with it.[1]

Hiding the Master Emerald[]
The Owls take the emerald with them
- "With it, a single warrior could defeat entire armies. Believing no one should have such power, an order of heroes recovered the emerald and swore to protect it from evil."

Sometime after the creation of the Master Emerald, an Echidna warrior used the power of the emerald to take down entire armies. The Owls however, engaged in the war to take away the Master Emerald from the Echidnas and hid it in a secure location, as they believed no one should have such power. As a result, the two species fought over the centuries, and the Owls became enemies of the Echidna.

Attack on Longclaw's Home[]
- "My tribe was on the verge of its greatest victory. The last of the owl warriors have been located. Soon, Longclaw's emerald secrets would be ours."

In 2013, the Echidna located the last of the Owl warriors, Longclaw, and headed out to ambush her in order to re-obtain the secrets of the Master Emerald. A young warrior, Knuckles the Echidna, wanted to fight alongside them, but his father told him that his moment would soon come to honor their tribe and told him to stay in the village.[1] The Echidna tribe tracked a young hedgehog, who was running around the island that day, back to Longclaw's Home. They would then attack the both of them, and after Longclaw sent Sonic to a distant planet at the farthest side of the universe,[2] a battle ensued between the Owl and the tribe. In the end, most of the tribe went extinct, with Longclaw[3] and Knuckles' father dying in the process.[1]
Searching for Sonic the Hedgehog[]
- "The hedgehog, he's the key to everything. He's the reason I'm investigating the most desolate corners of the galaxy. And he is my one chance to restore what was lost."

Knuckles, although saddened by his loss, went on to honor his tribe by hunting down Sonic the Hedgehog, believing he is the key to reobtaining the emerald,[3] and became the most feared warrior in the galaxy throughout the years.[1]
Knuckles battles a beast
In 2023, Knuckles visited a deserted planet in hopes of finding Sonic. Suddenly, he was ambushed by scavengers and brought to the Casino Night to battle a beast. After winning the battle, he asked the scavengers for a favor: to help him find "something fast". Mistaking Tails as the target, they would soon track him temporarily through different zones, but stopped after Knuckles told them that Tails wasn't the target and they had one more place where they could find a lead.[3]
Knuckles allies with Doctor Eggman
As they met chaos energy waves from the Mushroom Planet, the scavengers teleported to the planet via a ring portal, and would soon fall for Ivo Robotnik's booby traps. Afterwards, Knuckles entered through the ring and asked Robotnik where he got the blue quill. Robotnik told him that he got it "from a little blue menace on the planet called Earth," and that he'd be happy to show him the way.[1]
Knuckles on Earth[]

Eggman and Knuckles use a ring portal back to Earth and sneaks around the Wachowski Residence while Sonic talks to Ozzie about which movie they should watch. After cutting out the power and revealing themselves to Sonic, Knuckles violently demands the emerald's location since he knows that Sonic is Longclaw's apprentice, but Sonic claims that he doesn't know what he's talking about. Suddenly, Tails, who was also searching for Sonic, rams Knuckles with a police car and rescues him. In a high-speed chase throughout the town of Green Hills, Sonic and Tails manage to escape from Knuckles.
Eggman catches up to Knuckles with a lawn mower, asking his agent Stone to send a pod of upgrades to him. He also arranges a deal between him and Knuckles, in which he gets the Master Emerald and Eggman gets his revenge on Sonic. In the Egg-Mobile, they travel to Stone's Mean Bean Coffee Café where they pinpoint Sonic and Tails' location in Siberia, where a compass leading to the emerald is located.[1]
Finding the Master Emerald[]
- "The owls were fools to think they could hide this."

Knuckles and Eggman follow Sonic and Tails to an ancient temple where the compass resides, though their enemies have already acquired the compass. Sonic and Tails attempt to make a run for it, only for Eggman and Knuckles to follow them. Knuckles apprehends Sonic, telling him of his background as Sonic does so too, but Knuckles is caught by Tails with a mechanical rope. Sonic panics and throws the compass toward Tails, only for Eggman to catch it. Deploying missiles to knock Tails out, it also erupts an avalanche atop the mountain, forcing Sonic to flee toward Hawaii where his caretaker Tom Wachowski currently is for a wedding.
Meanwhile, Knuckles and Eggman teleport toward where the compass leads them, planting it into the sandy beach that unveils the secret Labyrinth. Seeing the labyrinth's reveal happening from afar, Sonic decides to travel over there, gaining a lot of speed to cross the ocean. Losing energy, Sonic awakens on the same beach his foes were on to see the Labyrinth close by. Both parties enter a maze filled with death traps until coming across the Master Emerald Shrine.[1]
Duel at the Master Emerald Shrine[]
Eggman obtains the Master Emerald
- "Is everything a joke to you? Why must you constantly interfere with my destiny?"
"Because my destiny is to protect my friends and family."
"I think I just threw up in my mouth."
"And if you want that emerald, you're gonna have to go. Through. Me!" - ―Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic the Hedgehog and Doctor Eggman[src]
At the Master Emerald Shrine, Sonic stops Knuckles and Eggman from going any further, wanting to protect the emerald and his friends and family. Knuckles thus fights him for it all the while Eggman silently nears it. When Knuckles is told of him stealing the emerald, Eggman lays his hands on it, fusing with its power and teleporting elsewhere. This act destroys the Labyrinth piece by piece, allowing the surrounding water to flood inside. Sonic and Knuckles rescue each other from drowning.
At the beach, Sonic has Knuckles change his ways through friendship, discontinuing his quest to honor his tribe and instead having him join his side. Regaining consciousness, Tails flies the two back to Green Hills.[1]
Battle Against the Giant Eggman Robot[]
- "It's over, Eggman."
- ―Super Sonic to Doctor Eggman[src]
Sonic, Tails and Knuckles return to find Eggman building a giant robotic replica of himself with the power of the emerald, each of them trying to attack it individually, but to no avail. Sonic then gains the idea of defeating him as a team, organizing a plan where Sonic and Tails distract Eggman before Knuckles punches the emerald out of his body.
Team Sonic is formed
With the emerald outside of the robot, a heavily injured Sonic reaches for it beside his caretakers, seeing how the emerald crumbles into little pieces. He embraces the Wachowskis as the smaller Chaos Emeralds transform him into Super Sonic. With the powers of a god, Super Sonic defeats Eggman once and for all, relinquishing the emeralds afterwards. Though without the Chaos Emeralds, Knuckles reforms the Master Emerald, vowing to protect it along with his newfound friends as Team Sonic.[1]

- "I've spent my whole life questing for this. Now I have it. Now we have it. What do we do with it? What next?"
"There were once two orders of heroes, who protected the galaxy from those who would use the emerald for evil."
"But they have all passed on to the Great Battleground in the Sky."

Besides protecting the Master Emerald from any incoming threats, Team Sonic would go on to protect and help the people of Green Hills while keeping the emerald safe in a cooler.[1]
